Brussels is the capital of Belgium and the administrative heart of the European Union. It grew from a 10th century fortress town founded by Charlemagne's grandson into a city of over one million inhabitants. Some of Brussels' most notable landmarks include the Grand Place, the European Commission building, the European Parliament building, Manneken Pis statue, and the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudule. Brussels is also surrounded by forests and parks.
