Nick started his career in a well-known and long running independent
Lloyds broker in 2010. This gave him a deep understanding of the
technicalities and nuances of the market as well as building strong client
networks and relationships. In 2015, Nick joined Eames’ Broking, Claims &
Underwriting team, developing the reinsurance proposition within London
and Europe.

I changed because I wanted control of my career. Broking is a
great career path but the progression can be slow and I wanted a
career where progression was defined by your achievements.
Recruitment rewards you for the work you do and the idea of
running a business within a business really appealed to me.

& A CAREER IN RECRUITMENT?
WHATS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE
TRANSITIONING INTO RECRUITMENT?
In broking I was selling treaty business along with my capabilities,
in recruitment my capabilities come first, it’s why relationships are

The consultative approach and building relationships, its not a
hard sales enviroment so the ability to build contacts is a skill
that’s very important in recruitment..

RECRUITMENT CONSULTANT?
A lot of the relationships I have in recruitment were levereged
from the relationships I had working in broking. It really helps
when trying to get a meeting and face time with clients and
candidates as the groundwork has already been made, they know
who I am and that I’m a credible person to speak to.
Very structured, more so than I used to be. A bit of searching for leads but
mostly organising meetings and face time with clients and candidates.
Meeting candidates for 3-4 hours a day is not unusual and I have flexibility to
meet who I want when I want which allows me to get a lot of face time in

RECRUITMENT LOOK LIKE?
WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF THE
WORK LIFE BALANCE?
It’s all about working smart. There isn’t a ridged working pattern
like in some recruitment firms, if you are able to work smatrt you
can work normal hours and this is supplimented with meeting
clients away from the office. The insurance team has membership
to a private members club which is always nice to take peoeple to

Evaluate your skills. If you are leaning towards being people
oreinted, results driven and problem solving you have the
attributes to work in recruitment. I would also look at what you
want from an employe; Eames is great at developing and training
its consultants so if you wat a supportive enviroment whilst being
given the freedom to work independently Eames could be the
company for you

Broking to Recruitment. The story of one man who made the move

  • 1. WHY MOVE FROM BROKING TO RECRUITMENT? FIND OUT FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS
  • 2. Nick started his career in a well-known and long running independent Lloyds broker in 2010. This gave him a deep understanding of the technicalities and nuances of the market as well as building strong client networks and relationships. In 2015, Nick joined Eames’ Broking, Claims & Underwriting team, developing the reinsurance proposition within London and Europe.   • 3. WHAT MADE YOU CHANGE YOUR CAREER IN BROKING TO A CAREER IN RECRUITMENT? I changed because I wanted control of my career. Broking is a great career path but the progression can be slow and I wanted a career where progression was defined by your achievements. Recruitment rewards you for the work you do and the idea of running a business within a business really appealed to me.

WHATS THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CAREER IN BROKING & A CAREER IN RECRUITMENT?
  • 5. WHATS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE TRANSITIONING INTO RECRUITMENT? In broking I was selling treaty business along with my capabilities, in recruitment my capabilities come first, it’s why relationships are so important .
  • 6. They are both people businesses. Its all about relationship building. Recruitment gives you the opportunity to utilise your netwrok and be financially rewarded for building relationships. ARE THERE ANY SIMILARITIES BETWEEN BROKING & RECRUITMENT?
  • 7. WHATS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE TRANSITIONING INTO RECRUITMENT? In broking I was selling treaty business along with my capabilities, in recruitment my capabilities come first, it’s why relationships are so important .
  • 8. HOW HAS EAMES HELPED YOU IN THE TRANSITION? Eames has very supportive managers; they are always there is you need to ask anything and that is true right up the hierachy and includes the CEO, its a very supportine enviroment. .

ARE THERE ANY SIMILARITIES BETWEEN BROKING & RECRUITMENT? The consultative approach and building relationships, its not a hard sales enviroment so the ability to build contacts is a skill that’s very important in recruitment.. WHATS SKILLS HAVE YOU FOUND TRANSITION WELL INTO RECRUITMENT?
  • 10. HOW HAVE YOUR BROKING CONTACTS HELPED YOU AS A RECRUITMENT CONSULTANT? A lot of the relationships I have in recruitment were levereged from the relationships I had working in broking. It really helps when trying to get a meeting and face time with clients and candidates as the groundwork has already been made, they know who I am and that I’m a credible person to speak to.
  • 11. Very structured, more so than I used to be. A bit of searching for leads but mostly organising meetings and face time with clients and candidates. Meeting candidates for 3-4 hours a day is not unusual and I have flexibility to meet who I want when I want which allows me to get a lot of face time in WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY IN RECRUITMENT LOOK LIKE?
  • 12. WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF THE WORK LIFE BALANCE? It’s all about working smart. There isn’t a ridged working pattern like in some recruitment firms, if you are able to work smatrt you can work normal hours and this is supplimented with meeting clients away from the office. The insurance team has membership to a private members club which is always nice to take peoeple to

If you are leaning towards being people oreinted, results driven and problem solving you have the attributes to work in recruitment. I would also look at what you want from an employe; Eames is great at developing and training its consultants so if you wat a supportive enviroment whilst being given the freedom to work independently Eames could be the company for you WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE MOVING INTO A CAREER IN RECRUITMENT FROM ANOTHER INFUSTRY?
