Editor's Notes
Hello everyone my name is Landon and my topic is going to be on bad hires.
So what is a bad hire? A bad hire is when employees are hired but do not have the traits the business is looking for. According to Mary Lorenzo her surveys consisted of some related issues that made a bad hire. From top to bottom is what people thought was the biggest issue on a bad hire. First is the quality of work. If it is bad work then quality is bad. Second is poor teamwork. This can cause a negative effect to where people think about themselves and not the company. Negative attitude is another issue because if they do not want to work, then they don’t want to do their job which will affect their work. Other issues consists of bad attendance, complaints from the customers. and failure to meet deadlines are all. If you don’t come to work you are not even working. If customers complain then you have bad customers service and if you don’t meet deadlines you are not responsible in completing your task. These make you a bad employee
The cost of a bad hire can hurt your business. A bad hire can cost the lost of production in your products, also a lost in time to recruit and train employees and the lost of money to pay the recruiters and trainers that recruited and trained the new employees. There can also be a negative impact on clients, which can cause fewer sales, and more legal issues.
Some hiring mistakes that are made during the hiring process are companies that try to fill the vacant jobs to quickly. If the company fills the vacant spot quickly then they might not know all of the applicants talent in which the applicant might not have all of the talents to do his or her job. Another mistake can be that companies adjust their techniques in hiring for every open position. There also can be fewer recruiters to check all applicants. Sometimes there is a failure to check references of how the applicant worked at their old job or school. Lastly they lack of strong employment brand.
To avoid bad hires Mary quoted a Jay Goltz an author of Street Smart Entrepreneur and he said that it comes down to the person who is doing the interview. There are some people that are good at interviewing and that there are those who are not. Another quote that Mary took from Michael Howell from the Hiring Site reader stated that you need to demand a specific set of required skills to get interviewed. She also quoted Rod Swartwood of the Hiring Site reader and he stated that you need to be continuously recruiting. Lastly she quoted Kevin Ryan the CEO of Gilt Group and stated that you need to know all about the worker.
So if you want to get hired, the hiring process consist of 6 steps. Spragins stated that first, you should be recruiting all the time. The best workers will work. Just don’t hire a person just because you need a person to fill in a position you should always have people working. Second you need to write a job description. Write down what the job is and the understanding of that position. Third you need to interview according to plan. After having the basic requirements you need to concentrate on two things. The first thing is the actual interchange between you and the employee. And the second thing is the overall interview strategy. Fourth is a personality test. The best test don’t produce answers but a profile that have leading indicators about someone and the profile is used to confirm things you might know about the person. Fifth is to keep score immediately after you see them. You can first easily look at scores first then look at characteristics about the person you are looking for, for the company. Last is to check references. But when you check references make it worthwhile and reach beyond the reference. Ask the person you are suppose to call for further references for the candidate so you can confirm more. If everything clears then you can hire.
