Britishness in Case Studies Task
- 1. Representation of Britain in Four Lions and Love Actually You are going to prepare a presentation on one of the set films that explores the way in which British society and culture is represented. You need to consider the following questions: How does the narrative/story of your film relate to British people? In what ways are the characters in the films definitively British people (think about stereotypes and representation) What is British society like according to your film? Is it multicultural, tolerant, wealthy, etc? How do the themes, message and values relate to British society? How is the humour distinctively British? Does the film give an accurate picture of British society? Why/ Why not? How might a British audience react to the representation of Britishness in your film? Possible Essay questions on Representation of ‘Britishness’ What have you found to be distinctively ‘British about the genre of films you have studied? To what extend do the films you have studied for this topic try to narrate specifically British stories? What makes the genre films you have studied specifically British films? Your presentation needs to refer to specific aspects of the films (key scenes, characters, quotes, key ideas etc) and needs to be detailed.
