STATUS OF AYURVEDADURINGBRITISH PERIOD
GUIDED BY: DR.R.D.PUJARI SIR
Acharya deshbhushan ayurvedic medical college Bedkihal shamnewadi
Department of samhita siddhant
Subject: Sanskrit
• Before the 16th century. Ayurveda and Unani system of medicine
was completely prevalent in India, but after the 16th century,
allopathy medicine arrived in India. At that time the western coast
of India was occupied by Portugal. Traders brought their doctors
with them in ships coming from Portugal.
•
• At that time. India had strong trade relations with Portugal as well
as many countries. Allopathic medicine system was started in India
by the doctors who came with these traders, gradually allopathic
medicine was promoted by the traders.
But when the British arrived in India as
a merchant and started the British rule
in 1757 with their diplomacy, and
gradually a trading company turned
into a political power and from 1858 to
1947, the British ruled the Indian
subcontinent.In this British rule, every
effort was made to destroy the Indian
system of medicine. After making trade
relations with India for many years, the
British understood that if India is to be
conquered, then education and
medical policy will have to be
destroyed here and they did the
same. The centres of education in India,
Gurukulas, were closed.
The period of British rule can also be called the period of decline of Indian
medical system. The British completely rejected the Indian system of medicine
and considered their medical system to be the best. Indian medical institutions
were destroyed and the medicinal garden was destroyed. In this way, Ayurveda
suffered a lot during the British rule, due to the fear of the British, the Indian
people could neither preserve the herbs nor use their medicine properly, due to
which gradually the effect of Ayurveda medicine decreased and Many medical
theories have disappeared
After finding Indian texts, collecting them either destroyed them or
sent them to their country, they studied the principles of Indian
texts but never praised, following the principles of Indian scriptures,
the British expressed the same as their principle. The British
implemented their system of medicine as the main medical system.
Promoted its medical system as scientific while Indian system of
medicine as unscientific, unproven and superstitious.
