• India had the unique distinction of six
systems : Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and
Yoga, Naturopathy and Homoeopathy.

proficiency but it faced recession during the
colonial era and tagged inferior causing

5. “Efforts to educate Indians”
• East India Company first laid the foundation
of Native Medical Institute of Kolkata for
quality medication to the military.
• William Bentinck, governor general
constituted a committee which recommended
it’s replacement with Calcutta Medical
College (1835).
7. Western Culture coming to being
• The first dissection by Indians was led under
Madhusudan Gupta, an Ayurveda teacher .
• Competitive entrance test was conducted in London
to recruit doctors into IMS.
• British surgeons were termed superior. Subordinate
medical services came into existence.
• The advancement in the fields of Western medical
science led to rapid decline of ISM.

• The Azizi family of Lucknow were practitioners
of ‘pure-Ayurveda’ .
• Indian medicine was labelled unscientific.
• Western medicine was stated official medicine
with a visible discrimination towards Indian
medicine.
10. Steps by ISM practitioners
• Usman Committee (1923) was the first
committee established for promoting Indian
Medicine.
• Khan Bahadur Sir Mohammad Usman, a
hakim and a politician, affirmed the
importance of Indian systems of medicine in
his Usman Committee report.
12. What were the outcomes… ?
• Vaidas established medicine companies to
prepare and sell/ export Indian medicines.
• There was no help by the government.
• During the British rule, the Indians started
practicing western medicine to attain higher
social standing.
13. Ayurveda attaining importance
• First Health Ministers’ conference (1946)
passed a resolution for training and
research in ISM.
• Thereafter came into existence committees
like Mudaliar (1959), Bajaj (1983), etc., which
advocated inclusion of Ayurveda in public
health services
