An escalator is a moving staircase that transports people between floors or levels. It consists of steps attached to a continuously moving band that carries people in one direction. Escalators were invented in 1892 by Charles Seeberger and take their name from the Latin word for stairs, "scala", and the word elevator. They are commonly found in places with high foot traffic like airports, train stations, shopping malls and allow people to move between levels without having to climb long flights of conventional stairs.
