Dr. Bruce Bloom is the President and Chief Science Officer of Cures Within Reach. His journey to this position started in February 2002, when he became the Executive Director of Goldman Philanthropic Partnerships, a 501(c)(3) private operating foundation. In 2005, when Goldman Partnerships created the public charity Partnership for Cures to carry on the Goldman mission, Dr. Bloom became President and Chief Science Officer. In October 2012, Partnership for Cures changed its name to Cures Within Reach to better reflect the focus of its mission: repurposing drugs and other treatments to drive more treatments to more patients more quickly.
Dr. Bloom directs the operation of this public charity dedicated to improving patient quality and length of life by facilitating pilot clinical trials testing repurposed treatments designed to be immediately incorporated into clinical use.
Cures Within Reach’s newest venture is CureAccelerator™, the only global online repurposing research collaboration platform designed to bring together funders, clinicians, researchers, industry and lay stakeholders to create and conduct pilot clinical trials that drive more repurposed treatments to more patients more quickly.

Ndetei reducing the treatment gap in mental health
Mental health disorders place a significant burden globally, especially in low and middle income countries where treatment access is extremely limited. Only 15-20% of those suffering receive care due to shortages of trained professionals and resources. Innovative task-sharing approaches are needed to close this gap and achieve scale, such as training community health workers. While developed countries have many psychiatrists per capita, most developing nations have far fewer - Kenya for example has just 80 psychiatrists for 40 million people. To significantly reduce the treatment gap within 10 years will require mobilizing all available resources through non-traditional, community-based approaches rather than only focusing on training more specialists.

Abstract
Kno.e.sis (http://knoesis.org) is a world-class research center that uses semantic, cognitive, and perceptual computing for gathering insights from physical/IoT, cyber/Web, and social and enterprise (e.g., clinical) big data. We innovate and employ semantic web, machine learning, NLP/IR, data mining, network science and highly scalable computing techniques. Our highly interdisciplinary research impacts health and clinical applications, biomedical and translational research, epidemiology, cognitive science, social good, policy, development, etc. A majority of our $12+ million in active funds come from the NSF and NIH. In this talk, I will provide an overview of some of our major research projects.
Kno.e.sis is highly successful in its primary mission of exceptional student outcomes: our students have exceptional publication and real-world impact and our PhDs compete with their counterparts from top 10 schools for initial jobs in research universities, top industry research labs, and highly competitive companies. A key reason for Kno.e.sis' success is its unique work culture involving teamwork to solve complex problems. Practically all our work involves real-world challenges, real-world data, interdisciplinary collaborators, path-breaking research to solve challenges, real-world deployments, real-world use, and measurable real-world impact.
In this talk, I will also seek to discuss our choice of research topics and our unique ecosystem that prepares our students for exceptional careers.

Orphans in the Desert is an online platform that aims to help people with rare diseases by allowing them to input unstructured health data to be analyzed by IBM's Watson for potential diagnoses, and to cluster patients together in order to incentivize treatment research. It serves as a safe place for rare disease patients to describe their symptoms freely without bias or preconceptions, and provides educational resources, support groups, and information on clinical studies. The platform allows for both individual analysis of user data as well as macro-level statistical analysis of particular or general rare diseases.

Mental health services in Sub-Saharan Africa face significant challenges due to high levels of poverty and limited resources. Poverty exacerbates the effects of mental illness and hinders treatment due to lack of access and stigma. Key issues include inadequate policies, low prioritization and funding of mental health, lack of infrastructure and human resources, and poor integration into primary health care. Moving forward will require policy reforms, capacity building, improved community care, fighting stigma, and multi-sectoral collaboration.

Mental health services in Sub-Saharan Africa face significant challenges due to high levels of poverty and limited resources. Poverty exacerbates the effects of mental illness and hinders treatment due to lack of access and stigma. Key issues include inadequate policies, low prioritization and funding of mental health, lack of infrastructure and human resources, and poor integration into primary health care. Moving forward will require policy reforms, capacity building, improved community care, fighting stigma, and multi-sectoral collaboration.
