What is biotic stress
 Damage done to plants by other living
organisms like bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites,
beneficial and harmful insects, weeds, and
cultivated or native plants.
 Biotic stress: It includes stress created by
pathogens, insect. pests, weeds etc.
 Order of pathogen based on the damage caused
by them: -
 Fungi> Bacteria >Viruses > Insects.
 Sources of variability in pathogen: mutation,
sexual reproduction, heterokaryosis and
parasexual reproduction.
 The concept of physiological races was given
by "Barrus” in 1911.
 The first study on genetics of disease
resistance was done by "Biffen" in 1905.
Resistance for biotic stress
 The rice Oriza sativa productivity is often adeversely
distributed by several abiotic and biotic stresses such as
drought fungal bacterial and nematod oriented biotic disease
and pest like brown plant hopper and stem borer.
 The major biotic stress such as bacterial leaf blight sheath
blight blast brown spot fals smut allow stem borer play
crucian rols in dicresing the productivity and quality of rice
grain.
DESEASE DEVELOPMENT
Development of any disease depends on a close
interaction among three diverse factors,
 The Host
 The pathogen
 The environment
Mechanism of disease resistant
A variety of mechanism are involved in disease
resistance which are as follows As 3 type
1 Mechanical
2 Hypersensitivity
3 Nutritional
Certain mechanical and/or anatomical features of the
host may prevent infection. For example, closed
flowering habit of wheat and barley prevents
infection by the spores of ovary infecting fungi.
Mechanical
Hypersensitivity
Immediately after infection, several host cells
surrounding the point of infection die, which
leads to death of the pathogen or at least
prevents its spore production.
Nutritional
The reduction in growth and in spore
production is generally supposed to be due to
unfavourable physiological conditions within
the host. Most likely, a resistant host does not
fulfil the nutritional requirements of the
pathogen and, thereby, limits its growth and
reproduction.
