The document outlines the sustainability plan for the 2010 Brasil Surf Pro circuit. It details the diagnostic studies conducted in each of the 5 regions to understand local environmental and social issues. Low impact materials were used throughout the events and selective waste disposal bins helped properly separate recyclables. Permanent protective fencing was installed at beaches to protect vegetation. An educational exhibition taught about threats to oceans from plastic and promoted sustainable consumption. Over 1,600 students participated in educational activities about coastal environments and sustainability.

What is Legacy? What does the word mean and how can we leave a “legacy” behind? If we look at the meaning in a dictionary, one would assume that we are talking about a static thing. However, when we talk about the legacy of association meetings, we could not be further from the truth! Whether it is the wealth of knowledge shared, the advancement of science, eradication of illnesses, changes of policy or creating awareness for a societal affliction, legacy is dynamic, develops organically and grows exponentially in accordance with the number of contributors supporting it. Whether we work for an association, venue, bureau or meeting organiser, we can all contribute to legacies. Join this session and be inspired to go further by being the force behind the creation of gifts and legacies for generations to come.
We collaborate with fishermen and brand owners to collect and upcycle ocean plastic into new products.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

4. Detailed diagnostic studies were carried out in every one of the five regions visited by the BSP circuit to obtain a clear idea of the principal local environmental and social issues. Each region was visited approximately two months before each contest and meetings were staged with state surfing federations and regional associations, environmental and social NGO's and local governmental agencies and departments for the environment and education. From the information gathered we then went to work to generate meaningful and lasting legacies for each region, always using the Agenda 21 motto “Think Global – Act Local” and remembering that the Brasil Surf Pro circuit will possibly be back in the same region or even the same beach next year. Needless to say we are contacting everyone already and paving the way to grow on the success of 2010. Diagnostic Study 5. 4. 3. 1. 4.

7. The selective disposal bins positioned throughout the event and an onsite separation depot meant that all recyclable material was divided into it´s specific categories at the contest. The cleaning and waste managent team were always contracted from local recycling cooperatives thus generating much needed extra income and drawing media and government attention toward more regional investment in recycling and the role of the “catador”. This experience in waste management was for many of our partner cooperative teams a positive learning experience and connections were made between their service and the regional surfing contests and other commercial events held throughout the year. Waste Management
8. Considering the fact that a national professional surfing contest attracts a large crowd, the protection of the beach vegetation is obviously a major priority. The beaches where the first and last legs of the circuit were held, the right side of Itamambuca beach (12 contests) and Posto 4 at Barra da Tijuca (9 contests) are intensely utilized for local, regional, national and even international contests throughout the year. It was therfore decided to leave a permanent legacy at each location which resulted in the placing of permanent protective eucalyptus fencing along the main contest areas and awareness signage in all access paths. Beach vegetation protection
9. The Surf and Sustainability program comprised of an educational exhibition space geared toward information and awareness regarding the danger that plastic is causing to the world´s ocean and coastal ecosystems and how sustainable consumption, in particular recycling, should play a greater role in our lives. Also it illustrated how the sport of surfing and NGO´s such as Surfrider Foundation are engaging society in addressing these important issues. In Ubatuba, Búzios and Florianópolis partnerships were formed with their respective Education and Environmant Governmental Secretariats resulting in the visitation of 1256 students between the ages 5 and 14 years. In Porto de Galinhas (Cupe) and Rio de Janeiro the contests coincided with the holiday period, so partnerships were formed with social inclusion projects resulting in 360 children from extremely poor communities visiting the contest, some children beleive it or not had never set foot on a beach in their lives..
