A study found over 24,000 chemicals, including endocrine disruptors, in 18 bottled water products tested. A plasticizer called DEHF was consistently found and identified as an endocrine disruptor causing anti-estrogenic activity. 16 of the 18 samples inhibited androgen receptors by 90%. While DEHF contributed to anti-estrogenic effects, additional unidentified chemicals likely contributed to anti-androgenic effects. The study suggests many chemicals from plastic production are leaching into water and more research is needed to identify these chemicals and their health impacts.
