Vegetable drugs used by traditional and indigenous communities to treat intes...Jefferson Lemos
Ethinobotanical studies are extremely important for the expansion and preservation of popular medicinal knowledge and the botanical species used for this purpose. In Brazil, the use of plants to treat parasitic diseases is very common in poor communities lacking basic sanitation. The objective of this work was to research botanical species used to treat worms, to identify the botanical families and plant structures most used by traditional and indigenous brazilian communities. For this, we conducted a literature review on the theme in brazilian scientific articles databases. Our results showed a greater representation of the Euphorbiaceae, Leguminosae and Anacardiaceae families, as well as that the barks and leaves are the most used structures. The results found serve as support for other studies in pharmacobotany and ethnopharmacology.

A major new development in this understanding is the recognition that
pet exposures consist of not only allergen exposures but also changes in microbial exposures.
Exposures to certain pet-associated microbes, especially in the neonatal period, appear to be able to
dramatically alter how a child's immune system develops and this in turn reduces the risk of allergic sensitization and disease.
An exciting challenge in the next few years will be to see whether these changes can be developed into a realistic preventative strategy
with the expectation of significantly reducing allergic disease, especially asthma.

Regulations on Genetically Altered Organisms

The use of genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) has been the center of many debates in recent years. While GMO’s have the potential to do great things, concerns arise over the risk involved. The United States (U.S.) is the largest grower of GM crops in the world, but unlike many other countries, there are no federal regulations on how we deal with genetically altered plants and animals. Federal laws are already in place that protects consumers by requiring that companies correctly label foods. I believe GMO’s should be included on food labels as well. Furthermore, many of our citizens do not know that GMO’s are already being used in our food. Putting all legalities aside, not informing people that they are purchasing GMO’s has an unethical air to it. There is no need to take away people’s choice in the matter by keeping them in the dark. Whether for or against GMO’s, at the very least, people should be able to make their own educated decisions about the foods they consume.
When I found out that GMO’s have been used in our foods for many years, I was angry and outraged. I felt like a guinea pig in a science experiment, unknowingly a participant in determining what side effects GMO’s may or may not have on people. I was asking myself “Where was I when these decisions were made?” I wasn’t exactly sure what a genetically modified organism entailed, and that was a major cause of my frustrations. At the time, “genetically modified” sounded like some crazy science experiment done to food. Not an appetizing term at all.
Regardless of whether or not GMO’s are labeled, it is best to educate yourself as to what they are. Closely related species can crossbreed, or have genes exchanged that create a plant that has traits of both parent species. When you genetically alter an organism, you are taking genes from one species and inserting it into an entirely different species. An example would be a study where a cow’s milk-producing genes were added into pigs DNA, in addition to genes that would help piglets digest the milk. But some crazy scientist had to take it a little further. There was a Chinese experiment done where jellyfish genes were inserted into pig DNA, and the result was glow in the dark piglets (Bodeen, 2008). Experiments like this seem very unnecessary.
Conversely, GM foods do in fact have many valuable benefits, such as increasing farming yields, vaccination by food, and even growing food in places that usually cannot support crops. There are so many countries in the world who's people suffer because the land cannot support crops. Vaccination by food has the potential to help millions and millions of people. Genetic engineering can improve the quality and life of a plant by allowing i ...

Pro-Con Position on Vegetarianism
Vegetarianism is often associated with its advantages including, weight loss, decreased risk for heart disease and saving lives of innocent animals. However, there is are several disadvantages, considering the harm it may cause such as, environmental issues and put person who do not eat meat at risk for health-related issues such as anemia. Supporters of vegetarianism may recommend becoming a vegetarian; however, evidence proves that this diet may cause health related issues and negatively affect the environment.
1st Counter-Argument (your oppositions’ point)
Health related risk from vegetarianism is steadily progressing as more patrons believe that by making the choice to become vegetarians promotes their health indirectly by consuming more fruits and vegetables. According to Dittfeld, A., Gwizdek, K., Jagielski, P., Brzęk, J., & Ziora, K. experts on vegetarian diets stated, “One study has shown a case of a boy whose strict vegetarian diet led to his death as a result of cachexia.” (2017, p 62) Cachexia can be defined as muscle faintness or wasting, this can cause muscle death and overall respiratory issues. Though it is important to eat vegetables and fruits, having a well-balanced diet is even more imperative especially for children. Children’s bodies are constantly growing and need vitamins and minerals from protein to encourage their growth. Persons with inferior levels of protein, sodium, iron, manganese and phosphorus in their blood and body systems are particularly cautious when changing to a vegetarian diet.
1st Rebuttal (your point)
Vegetarian diets prevent the leading cause of death in America; heart disease. Vegetarians ultimately reduce their amount of fat and cholesterol intake from meat, which may enhance their overall wellbeing and diet. As stated in the article, “Diet plays a key role in the most pervasive and deadly diseases afflicting the American population” Ballaro, B., & Sprague, N. (2016). Persons who consumer fruits and vegetables can help maintain wellbeing and prevent cancer, heart attacks and stroke. Commonly red meat and heavily saturated foods are connected to cardiac attacks while, vegetarians consume natural sugars provided by fruit and natural supplemental vitamins from vegetables.
2nd Counter-Argument
Supplements with acquired proteins and minerals have been created to meet the needs of those who do not consume meat. Vegetarians enhance their diets with over the counter vitamins and minerals to compensate for what they are missing. As stated, in the article “Vegans, who reject all animal products, including milk, eggs and honey, place themselves at even greater risk for malnutrition” Issitt, M., & Carson-Dewitt, R. (2016). CHAPTER 2: THE PESTICIDE CONTROVERSY
What is the pesticide controversy?
Ma W a 95 a b a Na G a a H a .
Fearful the British would poison him, Hitler made sure to only eat food after it was eaten by Margot
and fourteen other girls serving as his official tasters.22 Hitler may have been evil but he was not
stupid. He knew that poisons affect people differently, and knew that any food which harmed one
girl might harm him (then pity what would happen to the cook!).
Every year we spray something akin to poison on our food, and use something akin to H
system of making sure we are not harmed. The motives are polar opposites Hitler cared only for
the preservation of his person, while we seek the safety of all humans. Whether they are synthetic

three types of pests: insects, weeds, and pathogens (e.g., fungi and viruses). At some level they could
poison us also. Many contain carcinogens, cause neurological disorders, and the like. Yet, our food
seems safe to most people, and since 1992 cancer incidence rates have even fallen or remained the
same,23 cancer death rates have fallen,24 and life expectancy in the U.S. has been steadily increasing.25
Can we be absolutely sure pesticides are used safely? Not entirely, but like Hitler (and according to
movies, every Roman emperor, Catholic Pope, and Medieval king) we employ testers not in the
form of humans, but animals. All pesticides must be approved by the Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA), where the pesticide under consideration is given to laboratory animals at different
levels. The animals a time and used to gauge the threats to human health a
pesticide may pose. The EPA then determines whether the pesticide should be allowed, and if it is,
the specific instructions on how it should be applied.
Is it cruel to test pesticides on animals? It cer a , b
on animals will cause us to harm humans a notion in which 90% of toxicologists agree.26 Pesticides
decrease the cost of food, and make fruits and vegetables more affordable. Raise the price of these
healthy foods and cancer rates and other health problems in humans will rise.27 Help the lab animals,

Hitler was willing to sacrifice fifteen girls to save himself. The modern world is willing to sacrifice a
small number of laboratory animals to protect millions of humans. Moreover, the EPA continues to
find ways to reduce testing on animals without sacrificing food safety, like recent developments in
molecular and computational sciences, which can sometimes be substituted for animal
experimentation.28

11 CHAPTER 2 THE PESTICIDE CONTROVERSY What is the.docx
Study examines benefits of organic foods
1. Study examines benefits of organic foods
A Stanford University study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine last week showed that
eating organic produce and meat reduces a consumer's level of pesticide ingestion and exposure to
antibiotic-resistant bacteria. While these statements might seem obvious to anyone paying half-
attention, they are an important reinforcement of long-held beliefs by those of us who choose to
better our bodies by living organically.
Unfortunately, the headline you may have heard about the study sounded more like this: Organic
Food is Not Healthier Than Conventional Produce; Study Sees No Nutritional Edge in Organic
Foods; Still No Evidence that Organic Food is Healthier; and on, and on, and on.
The researchers at Stanford drew three conclusions from the more than 230 field studies and 17
human studies they analyzed. The two I already mentioned are fantastic confirmations of what many
people already suspected about organic meat and produce. The other - that organic foods may not be
significantly more nutritious than conventional foods - is a dangerous misinterpretation of
information and worse, a potential ploy to encourage consumers to buy conventionally grown
produce for the sole purpose of marginalizing the organic food industry.
By acknowledging that if you avoid fruits and vegetables grown with pesticides you will have fewer
such toxins in your body, the Stanford study does more than confirm the "significant" nutritious
effect this action can have on humans. When food is cultivated with pesticides, the chemicals often
spread beyond the crop, and into the surrounding soil, water, and air. The person eating foods
treated with pesticides is hardly the only one experiencing the associated negative health effects.
For instance, though the United States banned the chemical DDT, an insecticide also used for
agricultural purposes, in 1973, its use persisted in "minor" crops, as well as for public health reasons
and export of the material, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Thirty-three
years after DDT was banned in this country, a 2006 study by the University of California at Berkeley
found that in utero exposure to DDT was associated with developmental delays in young children.
What's more, a 2010 study in the journal Pediatrics linked exposure to other pesticides, known as
organophosphates, to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children. And a trio of studies
published in 2011 in Environmental Health Perspectives showed that when children were exposed to
organophosphates in the womb, they had lower IQs by the time they entered school than kids who
had virtually no exposure.
2. Aside from harming our children, pesticides affect wildlife, particularly the mysteriously
disappearing bees whose pollinating powers are vital to crop sustainability. This past spring, teams
of researchers in France and Britain suggested that low levels of common pesticides called
neonicotinoids fog the brains of honeybees, and also prevent bumblebees from supplying their hives
with enough food to produce a new queen. Heard of colony collapse disorder?
Rather than highlight the positive outcomes of the Stanford study, the media went for the jugular,
seizing the opportunity to misinform the public with a flashy headline questioning the nutritious
value of organic foods, all in the name of selling more papers or increasing website clicks.
By definition, the DNA of genetically modified organisms has been altered in a way that does not
occur naturally, according to the World Health Organization. Food producers cite the advantages of
genetic modification as increased crop protection, disease resistance, and herbicide tolerance. I
don't know about you, but the idea of putting anything unnaturally altered into my body because it
makes life easier for conventional food producers is not terribly appealing.
I want my fruits and vegetables to come from the land, not from the lab. I want to derive from my
organic fare the many benefits reported in reputable studies done elsewhere, like the one published
last year in the academic journal Critical Reviews in Plant Sciences. It revealed that organic fruits
and vegetables contain on average 12 percent more health-promoting compounds than
conventionally grown produce - compounds like secondary metabolites, which are believed to
protect against obesity, cancer, and heart disease.
The myth that organic foods are no better than their conventional counterparts is beyond salacious:
it is simply untrue. The Stanford study itself says so, if you choose to read it that way. The wide-
ranging negative health effects of pesticide use are blatant, and when you buy organic fruits and
vegetables you send a message to conventional food producers that their poisonous methods will not
be tolerated. And the same goes for choosing organic meat: by selecting this antibiotic-free method
of raising cows, chickens, and pigs, you not only repudiate the disgusting conditions in which less
fortunate animals live, but you help prevent the spread of potentially deadly, antibiotic-resistant
superbugs.
In this way and so many others, you can better the world for yourself, your family, and creatures big
and small, purely by eating organic foods. It actually is that simple.
