Lesson 19 of 26 in a series of New Testament Vistas. This sermon on Romans 5-8 was presented May 6, 2012, at Palm Desert Church of Christ, by Dale Wells.
God is faithful and just. He forgives our sins if we confess them. On this condition we receive mercy. Moreover, His love have not ceased. Therefore, we may commit the keeping of our souls to God as unto faithful Creator and Redeemer.

The Book of Joshua is the sixth book in the Hebrew Bible and the Old Testament, and is the first book of the Deuteronomistic history, the story of Israel from the conquest of Canaan to the Babylonian exile.
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

2. When it comes to love, God9s love is unlike human love. It9s totally different.
While human love is conditional, God9s love is unconditional. It is
independent of our works, goodness, and self-worth.
But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be
saved, even as they. Acts 15:11 KJV
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins,
according to the riches of his grace; Ephesians 1:7 KJV
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the
gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV
While human love is changeable, God9s love is unchangeable. God9s
love never fails.
The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with
an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.
Jeremiah 31:3 KJV
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or
distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are
accounted as sheep for the slaughter.
3. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that
loved us.
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor
principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate
us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:35-
39 KJV
Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail;
whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it
shall vanish away. 1 Corinthians 13:8 KJV
While human love is self-seeking, God9s love is self-sacrificing.
6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with
God:
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a
servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became
obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Philippians 2:6-8 KJV
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet
sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 KJV
But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the
suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of
God should taste death for every man. Hebrews 2:9 KJV
4. While love is only one of the attributes humans can have, God9s love
is not merely one of His attributes, it is the essence of His nature. God
is love.
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 1 John 4:8 KJV
And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love;
and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. 1 John 4:16
KJV
Everything that God is and does is based on His love 3 even His law
and wrath.
36
Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37
Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart,
and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38
This is the first and great commandment.
39
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
40
On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
Matthew 22:36-40 KJV
18
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and
unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
19
Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God
hath shewed it unto them.
5. 20
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly
seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal
power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
21
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God,
neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their
foolish heart was darkened.
22
Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23
And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like
to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping
things.
24
Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of
their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
25
Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the
creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
26
For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their
women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
27
And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned
in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is
unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error
which was meet.
28
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave
them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not
convenient;
29
Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness,
covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit,
malignity; whisperers,
30
Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil
things, disobedient to parents,
31
Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection,
implacable, unmerciful:
6. 32
Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things
are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that
do them.
Romans 1:18-32 KJV
The basis of our salvation is due to God9s nature of love. God saves
us because He loves us. We are saved by grace through faith alone,
not by faith plus works or only by works.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the
gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV
God9s agape love, His unconditional, unchanging, and self-sacrificing
love, was demonstrated and manifested through the death of His Son
Jesus Christ for on the cross to redeem us from eternal death, the
consequence of our sins. Christ9s death fully reconciled us with God.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:16 KJV
6
For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the
ungodly.
7
For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good
man some would even dare to die.
8
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet
sinners, Christ died for us.
9
Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from
wrath through him.
7. 10
For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death
of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
Romans 5:6-10 KJV
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
2
Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world,
according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in
the children of disobedience:
3
Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of
our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by
nature the children of wrath, even as others.
4
But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
5
Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ,
(by grace ye are saved;)
6
And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly
places in Christ Jesus:
Ephesians 2:1-6 KJV
This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus
came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. 1 Timothy 1:15
KJV
But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the
suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of
God should taste death for every man. Hebrews 2:9 KJV
God9s love is not only a forgiving love but also a redeeming love 3
one that saves us from eternal death, the consequence of our sins,
8. and gives us eternal life. This is something we don9t deserve but God
nevertheless gives it to us because He loves us so much and is so
gracious and merciful.
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins,
according to the riches of his grace; Ephesians 1:7 KJV
In this Bible Study, we want to dig deeper into God9s redeeming love
by studying a love story from the Old Testament 3 the love story of
Ruth and Boaz. This is the Reading and Reflection part.
Since this is a Creative Bible Study, there will be a lot of creative
elements accompanying it.
I hope and pray that you will be blessed by this Bible Study as you
learn about God9s redeeming love for us.

10. Ruth Chapter 1
Elimelek and his wife Naomi had two sons, Mahlon and
Kilion, and lived in the town of Bethlehem in Judah.
When the area was hit with famine, they decided to leave to
find food.
Now it came to pass in the days when the judges ruled, that there
was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehemjudah
went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he, and his wife, and his
two sons.
Ruth 1:1 KJV
11. They travelled to the nearby land of Moab and settled there to
live. The Moabite people did not worship God but their own
idols.
And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his
wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion,
Ephrathites of Bethlehemjudah. And they came into the country of
Moab, and continued there.
Ruth 1:2 KJV
12. Sometime later Elimelek died. The two sons grew up and
married local Moabite women, Ruth and Orpah.
And Elimelech Naomi's husband died; and she was left, and her
two sons.
And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the
one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled
there about ten years.
Ruth 1:3-4 KJV
13. Sadly, tragedy struck again. Ten years after the two sons had
settled in Moab, Mahlon and Kilion both died. It left three
widows, Naomi and her two young Moabite daughter-in-laws,
Ruth and Orpah.
And Mahlon and Chilion died also both of them; and the woman
was left of her two sons and her husband.
Ruth 1:5 KJV
14. When Naomi heard that the Lord had provided food for the
people back in Bethlehem she decided to return. The three
widows packed up their belongings.
Then she arose with her daughters in law, that she might return
from the country of Moab: for she had heard in the country of
Moab how that the LORD had visited his people in giving them
bread.
Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her
two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return
unto the land of Judah.
Ruth 1:6-7 KJV
15. Naomi then told her two daughter-in-laws, 8Go back to your
own mothers9 homes. May the Lord show you the same
kindness you have shown to your dead husbands and to me.
May God help you find new husbands.9
And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to
her mother's house: the Lord deal kindly with you, as ye have
dealt with the dead, and with me.
The Lord grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house
of her husband.
Ruth 1:8-9a KJV
16. Naomi kissed them both goodbye and they wept aloud. 8We
will go back with you to your people,9 they replied. 8No, you
must return home,9 Naomi insisted. 8You can marry again.9
Naomi felt embittered and that God was against her.
Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept.
And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy
people.
And Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with
me? are there yet any more sons in my womb, that they may be
your husbands?
17. Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have
an husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an
husband also to night, and should also bear sons;
Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for
them from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieveth
me much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone out
against me.
Ruth 1:9b-13 KJV
18. Orpah and Ruth wept again. Orpah kissed Naomi goodbye
and returned home to her mother9s house. Ruth, however,
clung hold of Naomi and would not let go.
And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed
her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her.
Ruth 1:14 KJV
19. 8Orpah has returned to her people and their gods,9 said
Naomi. 8Go back with her.9
And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her
people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law.
Ruth 1:15 KJV
20. 8Don9t urge me to leave you,9 Ruth replied. 8Where you go, I
will go, where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my
people and your God will be my God. Where you die, I will
die.9
And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from
following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where
thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy
God my God:
Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do
so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.
Ruth 1:16-17 KJV
21. When Naomi realized that Ruth was determined to stay with
her, they both set off on the road to Bethlehem.
When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her,
then she left speaking unto her.
So they two went until they came to Bethlehem.
Ruth 1:18-19a KJV
22. They arrived back in Bethlehem just as the barley harvest
was beginning. Their arrival caused quite a stir. Naomi9s grief
and suffering had changed her appearance so much that
many did not recognize her. 8Can this be Naomi?9 people
asked.
And it came to pass, when they were come to Bethlehem, that all
the city was moved about them, and they said, Is this Naomi?
Ruth 1:19b KJV
23. 8Don9t call me Naomi,9 she insisted. 8Call me Mara (which
means bitter) because God has made my life bitter. I went
away full, but the Lord has brought me back empty. The Lord
has brought misfortune on me.9
And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the
Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me.
I went out full and the LORD hath brought me home again empty:
why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the LORD hath testified against
me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?
24. So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law,
with her, which returned out of the country of Moab: and they
came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest.
Ruth 1:20-22 KJV
25. Chapter 1
First read Judges 2:11-12; 2:16-19; 21:25. Then read Chapter
1 of Ruth 3 Ruth 1:1-22 and answer the following questions.
1. When does the book of Ruth take place?
2. What was characteristic for the period of judges?
3. How was God9s sovereign power shown during this
period?
4. What did God command of Israel?
5. How is the book of Ruth different from the book of
Judges?
6. What does the word <kinsman redeemer= mean? How
does it apply to the book of Ruth? What does it mean
universally?
26. 7. The law forbade the marriage between an Israelite and a
foreigner. How could Ruth, being a Moabite woman, marry
an Israelite?
8. Why did Elimelech and his family have to live in Moab?
9. Where did Elimelech and his family originally come from?
10. Why did Naomi and her two daughters-in-law decide to
go back to the land of Judah?
11. Where did Naomi want her daughters-in-law to go?
12. How did the two daughters-in-law react to going back to
their own families?
13. What reasons did Naomi point out why it made no sense
if they went with her?
14. How did the two daughters-in-law react now?
15. Ruth refused to leave her mother-in-law. In Ruth 1:16-17
we can read that Ruth was willing to follow Naomi
wherever she went and wherever she stayed. She was
willing to accept Naomi9s people and God, to die and be
27. buried where Naomi would die and be buried. What does
this say about Ruth9s character?
16. How did the people in Bethlehem receive Naomi
and her daughter-in-law Ruth? Why did they ask, <Can
this be Naomi?=
17. Why didn9t Naomi want to be called Naomi
anymore? Why did she choose to call herself Mara?
What does this new name mean?
18. Did Naomi blame God for all her hardships?
19. What is the barley harvest? Please look it up in a
Bible dictionary.
28. Chapter 1
1. When does the book of Ruth take place?
The book of Ruth takes place during the time period of the judges
(Ruth 1:1)
2. What was characteristic for the period of judges?
The period of judges, in which the judges served as local rulers
and military leaders, was a time of chaos, crisis, and lawlessness
in which "everyone did what was right in his own eyes" (Judges
21:25).
3. How was God9s sovereign power shown during this
period?
It was shown through the idolatry of people.
4. What did God command of Israel?
He set them apart from other peoples and commanded them not
to enter into league with other people, not to marry people from
29. pagan nations, not to worship their gods. However, they often
failed.
5. How is the book of Ruth different from the book of
Judges?
The book of Ruth is a book of devotion, piety, and purity sharing
peace, kindness, worship of the one and true God, virtue, and
love whereas the book of Judges is about war, cruelty, idolatry,
villainy, and lust.
6. What does the word <kinsman redeemer= mean? How does
it apply to the book of Ruth? What does it mean
universally?
The word <kinsman= means <one who redeems=. It refers to the
nearest male blood relation alive. To redeem means <to buy back,
deliver=. In the book of Ruth Boaz was a kinsman of Naomi9s
deceased husband Elimelech. Knowing that both Naomi and her
daughter-in-law Ruth were widows, without protection and means,
he let Ruth work in his fields, provided them with extra food, finally
bought the lost inheritance of Naomi and Ruth, married Ruth, and
had a child with her called Obed. Obed became the father of
Jesse, and the grandfather of David. So, he was an ancestor of
Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Boaz who is the kinsman redeemer in the Old Testament points to
the true kinsman redeemer who is Jesus Christ, our Messiah.
30. Jesus Christ redeemed us from eternal death, the consequence
of sins, by living a perfect, righteous, sinless life and paying the
price in his His death on the cross. Through His obedience to His
Father and sacrifice, Jesus Christ made us righteous before God,
reconciled us with God, and gave us eternal life. Jesus Christ is
our true kinsman redeemer. If you believe in and accept Jesus
Christ as your Lord and Savior, you are not only forgiven but also
redeemed and are given eternal life with God.
7. The law forbade the marriage between an Israelite and a
foreigner. How could Ruth, being a Moabite woman, marry
an Israelite?
Deuteronomy 7:1-4 prohibits Israel from marrying the people who
dwelt in Canaan. There is no prohibition of marriage with a
Moabite. The Moabites were descendants of Lot, the nephew of
Abraham (Genesis 19:36-38;11:27).
Further information about this issue can be found here
https://www.gotquestions.org/Boaz-Ruth-and-the-Law.html
8. Why did Elimelech and his family have to live in Moab?
Because there was a famine in their home country Israel. (Ruth
1:1)
9. Where did Elimelech and his family originally come from?
They came from Bethlehem. (Ruth 1:1)
31. 10. Why did Naomi and her two daughters-in-law decide to
go back to the land of Judah?
Because Naomi heard in Moab that the Lord provided food for His
people. (Ruth 1:6)
11. Where did Naomi want her daughters-in-law to go?
She asked them to go back to their own families and find new
husbands. (Ruth 1:8-9)
12. How did the two daughters-in-law react to having to go
back to their own families?
They refused to leave Naomi and wanted to go back with her to
her family. (Ruth 1:10)
13. What reasons did Naomi point out why it made no sense
if they went with her?
" She didn9t have any more sons who could be their
husbands.
" She was too old to have another husband.
32. " Even if she had another husband and would give birth to
sons, they couldn9t wait for them to grow up until they could
marry them.
" Her daughters-in-law shouldn9t stay unmarried.
(Ruth 1:11-13)
14. How did the two daughters-in-law react now?
Orpah left them but Ruth clung to her mother-in-law. (Ruth 1:14)
Orpah wanted to become a wife again. Ruth wanted to stay a
daughter.
15. Ruth refused to leave her mother-in-law. In Ruth 1:16-17
we can read that Ruth was willing to follow Naomi
wherever she went and wherever she stayed. She was
willing to accept Naomi9s people and God, to die and be
buried where Naomi would die and be buried. What does
this say about Ruth9s character?
Ruth loved her mother-in-law very much and was faithful to her.
She was willing to give up her previous life for her. She started to
fully trust in God. (Ruth 1:16-17)
16. How did the people in Bethlehem receive Naomi and her
daughter-in-law Ruth? Why did they ask, <Can this be
Naomi?=
33. The people were excited about their return. Their question <Can
this be Naomi?= might indicate that the harsh years had altered
Naomi9s appearance. (Ruth 1:19)
17. Why didn9t Naomi want to be called Naomi anymore?
Why did she choose to call herself Mara? What does this
new name mean?
She didn9t want to be called Naomi anymore because after all the
bitterness the Lord had given her and everything He had taken
away from her, Mara would be the right name for her. It
expressed her grief after the deaths of her husband and sons.
Mara means <bitter=.
18. Did Naomi blame God for all her hardships?
Although it seems as if Naomi was blaming God for her hardships
in Ruth 1:20-21, her actions showed that she wasn9t bitter against
the Lord. If she was, she wouldn9t have come back home but
would have gone further away from Him. She knew that God was
sovereign and saw His hand in all her calamity. Amid all her
bitterness, she still decided to draw closer to God and trust in
Him. She came back with repentance and honesty.
19. What is the barley harvest? Please look it up in a Bible
dictionary.
34. The barley harvest in ancient Israel took place in the early spring.
According to the Law, the first grain of the barley harvest was to
be brought to Yahweh's Temple and offered at Yahweh's altar of
sacrifice on the first day of the week on the Feast of First Fruits
during the holy week of the pilgrim feast of Unleavened Bread.
(Leviticus 23:5-14)
35. Ruth Chapter 2
After Naomi and Ruth arrived in Bethlehem, they needed
food. 8Let me go into the barley fields to pick up the leftover
grain.9 The poor were allowed to pick up grain that the
harvesters had left on the ground. 8Go ahead, my daughter,9
Naomi replied.
And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband's, a mighty man of
wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz.
36. And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi, Let me now go to the
field, and glean ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall find
grace. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter.
Ruth 2:1-2 KJV
37. Ruth went into the fields belonging to Boaz. Boaz was a
relative of Naomi9s dead husband Elimelek. Later Boaz
arrived and greeted the harvesters. 8The Lord be with you.9
The harvesters replied, 8The Lord bless you.9
And she went, and came, and gleaned in the field after the
reapers: and her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging
unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech.
And, behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said unto the
reapers, The LORD be with you. And they answered him, The
LORD bless thee.
Ruth 2:3-4 KJV
38. Boaz noticed Ruth collecting grain with the poor. 8Who is that
woman?9 he asked the man in charge of the harvesting. 8She
is the Moabite who returned with Naomi,9 he answered. 8She
asked permission to pick up grain and has been working
hard.9
Then said Boaz unto his servant that was set over the reapers,
Whose damsel is this?
And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said,
It is the Moabitish damsel that came back with Naomi out of the
country of Moab:
39. And she said, I pray you, let me glean and gather after the
reapers among the sheaves: so she came, and hath continued
even from the morning until now, that she tarried a little in the
house.
Ruth 2:5-7 KJV
40. Boaz went across to Ruth. 8Stay in these fields with the
women who work for me,9 Boaz told her. 8I have told the men
not to lay a hand on you. When you get thirsty help yourself
to the water jars the men have filled.9
Then said Boaz unto Ruth, Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go
not to glean in another field, neither go from hence, but abide
here fast by my maidens:
Let thine eyes be on the field that they do reap, and go thou after
them: have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch
thee? and when thou art athirst, go unto the vessels, and drink of
that which the young men have drawn. Ruth 2:8-9 KJV
41. Ruth bowed down before Boaz. 8Why are you treating a
foreigner so kindly?9 she asked.
Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and
said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes, that thou
shouldest take knowledge of me, seeing I am a stranger?
Ruth 2:10 KJV
42. 8I have been told how you have cared for Naomi,9 Boaz
answered. 8May God, under whose wings you have taken
refuge, richly reward you.9 8Even though I am lower than one
of your servants you have spoken kindly to me and put me at
my ease,9 Ruth responded.
And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed
me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death
of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy
mother, and the land of thy nativity, and art come unto a people
which thou knewest not heretofore.
43. The LORD recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee
of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to
trust.
Then she said, Let me find favour in thy sight, my lord; for that
thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken friendly
unto thine handmaid, though I be not like unto one of thine
handmaidens.
Ruth 2:11-13 KJV
44. At mealtime Boaz invited her to eat with the other harvesters.
8Have some bread and dip it in the wine vinegar,9 he said. He
offered her roasted grain. Ruth ate all she wanted.
And Boaz said unto her, At mealtime come thou hither, and eat of
the bread, and dip thy morsel in the vinegar. And she sat beside
the reapers: and he reached her parched corn, and she did eat,
and was sufficed, and left.
Ruth 2:14 KJV
45. When Ruth got up to continue working, Boaz gave secret
orders to his men. 8Let her gather among the sheaves
without telling her off. Even pull out some stalks from the
bundles and drop them for her to gather.9 Ruth busily
gathered grain until the evening.
And when she was risen up to glean, Boaz commanded his young
men, saying, Let her glean even among the sheaves, and
reproach her not:
And let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her, and
leave them, that she may glean them, and rebuke her not.
46. So she gleaned in the field until even, and beat out that she had
gleaned: and it was about an ephah of barley.
Ruth 2:15-17 KJV
47. Ruth threshed the barley she had gathered and took it home
to Naomi. It was a large amount, about 30 pounds (13
kilograms). She also brought Naomi the food leftover from
the meal she had with Boaz and the harvesters.
And she took it up, and went into the city: and her mother in law
saw what she had gleaned: and she brought forth, and gave to
her that she had reserved after she was sufficed.
Ruth 2:18 KJV
48. 8Where did you gather grain today?9 Naomi asked. 8Who is
the man who has been kind to you?9 8Boaz, Ruth replied. 8The
Lord bless him,9 said Naomi. 8He is a close relative we know
as a guardian-redeemer. He has an obligation to look after a
relative who is in need.9
And her mother in law said unto her, Where hast thou gleaned to
day? and where wroughtest thou? blessed be he that did take
knowledge of thee. And she shewed her mother in law with whom
she had wrought, and said, The man's name with whom I wrought
to day is Boaz.
And Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he of
the LORD, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the
49. dead. And Naomi said unto her, The man is near of kin unto us,
one of our next kinsmen.
Ruth 2:19-20 KJV
50. From that point on Ruth continued gathering grain in the
fields belonging to Boaz. She stayed close to the other
women gathering grain knowing she would be safe. She
worked hard in the barley harvest and then in the wheat
harvest that followed making sure that Naomi had enough
food to eat.
And Ruth the Moabitess said, He said unto me also, Thou shalt
keep fast by my young men, until they have ended all my harvest.
And Naomi said unto Ruth her daughter in law, It is good, my
daughter, that thou go out with his maidens, that they meet thee
not in any other field.
51. So she kept fast by the maidens of Boaz to glean unto the end of
barley harvest and of wheat harvest; and dwelt with her mother in
law.
Ruth 2:21-23 KJV
52. Chapter 2
Read Ruth 2:1-23 and answer the following questions.
1. Who was Boaz? How is he described?
2. How did Ruth want to support her mother-in-law?
3. Read Ruth 2:4. How did Boaz greet his workers? What can
we learn from this?
4. According to the law, Ruth had the right as a foreigner and
poor widow to glean in the field. (Deuteronomy 24:19)
Nevertheless, she asked for permission from the chief
servant. What is more, although she was permitted to
glean stalks that the reapers had dropped, she wanted to
glean after the sheaves had been tied in bundles and set
upright. What does this say about Ruth9s Character?
5. Boaz must have been impressed by Ruth as he had
already heard about her devotion to Naomi from the other
village women. (Ruth 2:11) What did he offer Ruth?
53. 6. How was Ruth9s reaction to Boaz9s exceptional kindness
and generosity?
7. Why did Boaz show so much kindness and generosity to
Ruth?
8. How was Naomi9s response to Ruth when she saw that
Ruth came home with such a large amount of grain and
found out she came under the good favor of their kinsman,
Boaz? Summarize Ruth 2:17-23.
54. Chapter 2
1. Who was Boaz? How is he described?
Boaz was a relative of Naomi9s husband Elimelech. He is
described as <a man of great wealth=. (Ruth 2:1)
2. How did Ruth want to support her mother-in-law?
She decided to go to the field and glean grain after the reapers.
(Ruth 2:2)
3. Read Ruth 2:4. How did Boaz greet his workers? What can
we learn from this?
Boaz greeted his workers with <May the Lord be with you.= And
his workers greet him back with <May the Lord bless you.= (Ruth
2:4)
This shows us that Boaz was a believer in God and
acknowledged that God was His and His worker9s provider and
protector. He believed that his faith should be part of every area
of life.
Asking for permission from the chief servant for gleaning in the
field although it was her right shows that she is courageous,
humble, and respectful. Giving herself a restraint by gleaning after
the sheaves instead of gleaning after the stalks shows that she
doesn9t want to take advantage of the generosity that has been
given to her. (Ruth 2:7)
5. Boaz must have been impressed by Ruth as he had
already heard about her devotion to Naomi from the other
village women. (Ruth 2:11) What did he offer Ruth?
Boaz was impressed by Ruth9s devotion for her mother-in-law and
for her hard work to support her. To reward Ruth, he let her
continue to work in his field but under his protection. (Ruth 2:8-9)
6. How was Ruth9s reaction to Boaz9s exceptional kindness
and generosity?
Ruth realized that Boaz9s kindness and generosity was more than
required under these circumstances. She reacted with gratitude
56. by bowing down in humility. She asked Boaz why he would show
so much kindness towards her since she was only a foreigner.
She wasn9t even one of his maidservants. (Ruth 2:10, 13)
7. Why did Boaz show so much kindness and generosity to
Ruth?
Boaz showed so much kindness and generosity to Ruth because
he was impressed by her devotion to Naomi and her will to leave
her home country and live in a foreign country. He wanted to
reward her for all of this. He even spoke a prayer to her that God
would reward her work and bless her. (Ruth 2:11-12)
8. How was Naomi9s response to Ruth when she saw that
Ruth came home with such a large amount of grain and
found out she came under the good favor of their kinsman,
Boaz? Summarize Ruth 2:17-23.
When Naomi saw that Ruth brought home so much grain, she
blessed the one who gave this favor to Ruth.
She blessed the man a second time when she found out it was
Boaz who showed so much kindness and generosity.
Then she told Ruth that Boaz was their relative and one of their
redeemers. (Ruth 2:17-23)
Naomi was relieved that Boaz advised Ruth to stay close to his
servants and instructed Ruth to work with Boaz9s young women
so that she would not get assaulted.
57. Ruth followed Naomi9s instructions and stayed close to the
young women of Boaz and worked until the end of the barley
harvest and the wheat harvest. She continued to live with her
mother-in-law.
58. Ruth Chapter 3
One day Ruth9s mother in-law Naomi said to her, 8My
daughter you must have a future where you will be provided
for. Tonight, Boaz will be winnowing barley. Wash, put on
perfume and dress in your best clothes.9 Then she told Ruth
what to do next.
Then Naomi her mother in law said unto her, My daughter, shall I
not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee?
59. And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou
wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to night in the threshingfloor.
Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon
thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not thyself known
unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.
And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place
where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and
lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do.
And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will do.
Ruth 3:1-5 KJV
60. Ruth made her way down to the threshing floor where Boaz
was working making sure she was not seen.
And she went down unto the floor, and did according to all that
her mother in law bade her.
Ruth 3:6 KJV
61. When Boaz had finished eating and drinking, he lay down at
the far end of a grain pile. Ruth crept up to him, uncovered
his feet and lay down.
And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry,
he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn: and she came
softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down.
Ruth 3:7 KJV
62. During the night Boaz woke up to find a woman asleep at his
feet. 8Who are you?9 he asked. 8I am your servant Ruth,9 she
replied. Spread the corner of your garment over me as you
are a guardian redeemer of my family.9 A guardian redeemer
was someone obliged to look after a relative in need. Boaz
was related to Naomi9s dead husband Elimelek.
And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and
turned himself: and, behold, a woman lay at his feet.
And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thine
handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid; for
thou art a near kinsman. Ruth 3:8-9 KJV
63. 8The Lord bless you.9 replied Boaz. 8You have not run after
younger men and people know you are a woman of good
character. I am your guardian redeemer but there is another
person more closely related than I am. If he is not willing to
redeem you, then I will.9 Ruth lay at his feet until morning.
Boaz filled the shawl she was wearing with grain to take back
to Naomi.
And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter: for thou
hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the
beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether
poor or rich.
64. And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou
requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a
virtuous woman.
And now it is true that I am thy near kinsman: howbeit there is a
kinsman nearer than I.
Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will
perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the
kinsman's part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee,
then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as the LORD liveth: lie
down until the morning.
And she lay at his feet until the morning: and she rose up before
one could know another. And he said, Let it not be known that a
woman came into the floor.
Also he said, Bring the vail that thou hast upon thee, and hold it.
And when she held it, he measured six measures of barley, and
laid it on her: and she went into the city.
And when she came to her mother in law, she said, Who art thou,
my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her.
And she said, These six measures of barley gave he me; for he
said to me, Go not empty unto thy mother in law.
Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the
matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have
finished the thing this day.
Ruth 3:10-18 KJV
65. Chapter 3
Read Ruth 3:1-18 and answer the following questions.
1. What plan did Naomi have for Ruth? What was the goal of
this plan?
2. What instructions did Naomi give to Ruth?
3. What could the act of uncovering the feet of Boaz mean?
4. How was Boaz9s reaction to Ruth9s approach?
5. Boaz couldn9t redeem and marry Ruth right away. Why?
6. Before Boaz sent Ruth home early in the morning so that
nobody would recognize her and spread false rumors, he
gave her a great amount of barley saying, <Do not go to
your mother-in-law empty-handed.= Regarding Ruth 1:21,
what could this expression point to?
66. Chapter 3
1. What plan did Naomi have for Ruth? What was the goal of
this plan?
Naomi was concerned about Ruth9s life as an unprotected
woman. For this reason, she wanted Boaz to become Ruth9s
kinsman-redeemer and husband. (Ruth 3:1)
2. What instructions did Naomi give to Ruth?
Naomi instructed Ruth to groom herself and to put on her best
clothes and to go to the threshing floor at night.
However, she should wait until Boaz had finished eating and
drinking and would lie down to sleep. Then Ruth should uncover
the feet of Boaz and lie down at his feet. The rest would be up to
Boaz. (Ruth 3:2-4)
3. What could the act of uncovering the feet of Boaz mean?
There have been many interpretations of what uncovering the feet
of Boaz could mean.
67. Some interpretations say that the uncovering of the feet was
simply meant to wake up Boaz.
Others say that the feet are often used as a Hebrew euphemism
for the genital parts of a man and that uncovering them as a
woman means your willingness to have sex with that man and
therefore to express a desire for him to marry you. Given that both
Boaz and Ruth were people with piety, prudence, and integrity,
this act would be contrary to their characters. Furthermore, would
Naomi really advise her daughter-in-law to do such an indecent
and risky act? Boaz loved Ruth9s modesty. What would he think if
he was approached by Ruth in such an indecent way?
Therefore, the interpretation that makes most sense and explains
a gesture that was common in that culture and time, is the one in
which uncovering the feet and lying down at the feet is an act of
total submission.
Ruth was to uncover and lay by Boaz9s feet. She was lying there
as an act of submission. Lying at the foot of him meant lying as a
servant would lay at a master9s feet.
Naomi advised Ruth to claim her right to expect Boaz to marry her
because he was her kinsman-redeemer but to do it in a way that
was humble and trusting in the goodness of her kinsman-
redeemer.
(Ruth 3:6-7)
4. How was Boaz9s reaction to Ruth9s approach?
68. Boaz was startled to find a woman at his feet but when Ruth
revealed herself and humbly referred to herself as his
maidservant, made her plea, and asked him to spread his
garment over her to show that he was her redeemer and potential
husband (Ezekiel 16:8), he reacted virtuously and blessed her.
He told Ruth that she had shown more kindness than for the first
time, because she hadn9t forsaken Naomi and working.
Furthermore, she didn9t marry a young man as would be expected
but was more concerned to fulfill her family duty.
He assured her that everything she had done was alright and that
she was a virtuous woman. He would fulfill what he asked him for.
(Ruth 3:8-11)
5. Boaz couldn9t redeem and marry Ruth right away. Why?
Boaz couldn9t redeem and marry Ruth right away because there
was a kinsman who was closer related to Naomi9s family than
him. (Ruth 3:12-13)
6. Before Boaz sent Ruth home early in the morning so that
nobody would recognize her and spread false rumors, he
gave her a great amount of barley saying, <Do not go to
69. your mother-in-law empty-handed.= Regarding Ruth 1:21,
what could this expression point to?
When Naomi returned to Bethlehem, she had nothing. She came
empty-handed. The expression <Do not go to your mother-in-law
empty-handed.= could mean that Naomi9s <empty= days are over
because Boaz would redeem them.
(Ruth 3:14-17)
70. Ruth Chapter 4
Boaz went to the town gate where business deals were done.
When he saw the guardian redeemer who was more closely
related to Naomi9s former husband, he asked him to sit down
with ten elders gathered as witnesses.
Then went Boaz up to the gate, and sat him down there: and,
behold, the kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by; unto whom
he said, Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned
aside, and sat down.
71. And he took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, Sit ye
down here. And they sat down.
Ruth 4:1-2 KJV
72. 8Naomi is selling the land that belonged to our relative
Elimelek,9 Boaz explained. 8You have the first right to buy it
but if you do not want to, then I will.9
And he said unto the kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of
the country of Moab, selleth a parcel of land, which was our
brother Elimelech's:
And I thought to advertise thee, saying, Buy it before the
inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou wilt
redeem it, redeem it: but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me,
that I may know: for there is none to redeem it beside thee; and I
am after thee. And he said, I will redeem it.
73. Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of
Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of
the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance.
Ruth 4:3-5 KJV
74. 8I cannot buy the land without causing problems with my own
estate,9 came the reply. 8You buy it as I cannot.9
And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar
mine own inheritance: redeem thou my right to thyself; for I
cannot redeem it.
Ruth 4:6 KJV
75. It was the custom to seal a deal on buying property by one
party taking off a sandal and giving it to the other. 8The
guardian redeemer who had first choice on the land took off
his sandal and gave it to Boaz.
Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning
redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a
man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this
was a testimony in Israel.
Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thee. So he drew
off his shoe.
Ruth 4:7-8 KJV
76. Boaz made an announcement to the elders and those
gathered. 8Today I have bought from Naomi the property of
Elimelek, and his sons Mahlon and Kilion. I have also
acquired Ruth the Moabite as my wife. You are my
witnesses.9
And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are
witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech's,
and all that was Chilion's and Mahlon's, of the hand of Naomi.
Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I
purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon
his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from
77. among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are
witnesses this day.
And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We
are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into thine
house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of
Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in
Bethlehem:
And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, whom Tamar bare
unto Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this
young woman.
Ruth 4:9-12 KJV
78. So Boaz married Ruth and the Lord blessed them with a son.
Women told Naomi, 8Praise the Lord. He has looked after you
in your old age. Ruth loves you and is better to you than
seven sons.9 Ruth and Boaz9s son was called Obed. Obed
was the father of Jesse whose youngest son David became
King of Israel. A descendant of David was Mary the mother of
Jesus.
So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in
unto her, the LORD gave her conception, and she bare a son.
And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, which
hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may
be famous in Israel.
79. And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of
thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is
better to thee than seven sons, hath born him.
And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became
nurse unto it.
And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a
son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the
father of Jesse, the father of David.
Now these are the generations of Pharez: Pharez begat Hezron,
And Hezron begat Ram, and Ram begat Amminadab,
And Amminadab begat Nahshon, and Nahshon begat Salmon,
And Salmon begat Boaz, and Boaz begat Obed,
And Obed begat Jesse, and Jesse begat David.
Ruth 4:13-22
80. Chapter 4
Read Ruth 4:1-22 and answer the following questions.
1. Why did Boaz go to the gate of the city of Bethlehem?
What did the city gate represent at that time?
2. How many elders did Boaz select to serve as witnesses?
3. What were the steps the closer kinsman-redeemer had to
take to redeem Ruth?
4. First the closer kinsman-redeemer expressed his wish to
be Naomi9s redeemer but then he changed his mind and
rejected to be the redeemer. Why?
5. The kinsman gave his right of redemption to Boaz and
removed his sandal and gave it to Boaz. What did this act
of removing a sandal mean?
6. Describe what the witnesses pronounced after Boaz
became the kinsman-redeemer of Naomi and Ruth.
81. 7. After Boaz and Ruth married and Ruth conceived a child,
the women of the city blessed Naomi. What did they say?
8. What did Naomi express when she <took the child, and
laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it.=?
9. What does the name Obed mean?
10. Why is this genealogy so important?
82. Chapter 4
1. Why did Boaz go to the gate of the city of Bethlehem?
What did the city gate represent at that time?
Boaz went to the city gate to settle the matter of who had the right
to redeem Ruth. The city gate was an important center of the
city9s public life. Business, legal, and city matters took place there.
(Ruth 4:1)
2. How many elders did Boaz select to serve as witnesses?
Boaz selected 10 city elders to be his witnesses. (Ruth 4:2)
3. What were the steps the closer kinsman-redeemer had to
take to redeem Ruth?
1. He had to buy the land of Naomi9s deceased husband
Elimelech.
2. He had to marry Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of the
deceased, to raise up the name of the deceased on his
inheritance.
83. (Ruth 4:3-4)
4. First the closer kinsman-redeemer expressed his wish to
be Naomi9s redeemer but then he changed his mind and
rejected to be the redeemer. Why?
The closer kinsman-redeemer rejected the offer of being the
redeemer because he found out that he would need to marry Ruth
the Moabitess, which would compromise his inheritance.
(Ruth 4:5-16)
5. The kinsman gave his right of redemption to Boaz and
removed his sandal and gave it to Boaz. What did this act
of removing a sandal mean?
The act of removing a sandal was a custom in Israel at that time
to confirm a matter. With this act the kinsman confirmed that he
gave his right of redemption to Boaz and Boaz was the kinsman-
redeemer of Naomi and Ruth now.
(Ruth 4:7-9)
6. Describe what the witnesses pronounced after Boaz
became the kinsman-redeemer of Naomi and Ruth.
The witnesses blessed Ruth as a woman to be like Rachel and
Leah, who were considered to be the mothers of the people of
Israel.
84. Then they blessed Boaz to achieve wealth in Ephrathah and
become famous in Bethlehem.
Furthermore, they blessed the descendants and mentioned
Tamar who was in a similar situation as Ruth (Genesis 38:6:29).
This blessing was a prophecy to the birth of Jesus, the promised
Redeemer, Messiah, in Bethlehem.
(Ruth 4:11-12)
7. After Boaz and Ruth married and Ruth conceived a child,
the women of the city blessed Naomi. What did they say?
" They praised the Lord for having provided a kinsman-
redeemer for Naomi and Ruth.
" They praised Boaz for having become the kinsman-
redeemer.
" They praised the son who became the restorer and sustainer
of Naomi9s old age.
" They praised Ruth as better than seven sons. The number
seven symbolizes fullness and perfection. (1 Samuel 2:5)
(Ruth 4:13-15)
85. 8. What did Naomi express when she <took the child, and laid
it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it.=?
This could either mean that she was a wet nurse to the child, or it
was a symbolic act of adoption since her grandson was her legal
heir.
(Ruth 4:16)
9. What does the name Obed mean?
The name Obed means <servant=.
(Ruth 4:17)
10. Why is this genealogy so important?
It is so important because from this genealogy arose first David,
the king of Israel and finally, Jesus Christ, the king of kings, our
Lord and Savior.
(Ruth 4:18-22)
86. 1. In what ways was Boaz a type of Christ?
Boaz was a redeemer. (Ruth 2:20)
Boaz was the lord of harvest. (Ruth 2:3)
Boaz was dispenser of bread. (Ruth 3:15)
Boaz was a giver of rest. (Ruth 3:1)
Boaz was a man of valor (Ruth 2:1)
2. Hesed which means <love and faithfulness= in Hebrew
describes a love and faithfulness that inspires merciful and
compassionate behavior toward another people. How do
Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz show hesed love?
Naomi shows hesed love by giving Ruth a home and treating her
like a daughter.
Ruth shows hesed love through her faithfulness and devotion to
her mother-in-law Naomi.
Boaz shows hesed love through his kindness to both women and
his willingness to act as their kinsman-redeemer.
87. 3. What virtues do Boaz and Ruth show?
Boaz shows virtues such as compassion, mercy, chastity, faith,
piety, and obedience to God.
Ruth shows virtues such as faithfulness, fidelity, humility,
obedience, chastity, devotion, and piety.
4. Five women are mentioned in Matthew's genealogy of
Jesus Christ. Ruth is only one of four women who are
named in the genealogy. Who are the other women and
what fifth woman is unnamed?
These are the women that are mentioned in Matthew9s genealogy
of Jesus Christ: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and Mary of Nazareth.
Bathsheba is not named, but only referred to as <Uriah9s Wife=.
(Matthew 1:1-6 and 2 Samuel 11-12)
5. How is God9s redeeming love shown in the Book of Ruth?
While God9s love is shown in many ways in the Book of Ruth 3
love between Naomi and her daughters-in-law, love between
Naomi and Ruth, love between Ruth and Boaz, love of Boaz
towards Naomi, love of Naomi towards her grandson, love of
Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz towards God, God9s redeeming love is
especially shown in the love of Boaz towards both Ruth and
Naomi. As their kinsman-redeemer he shows exceptional grace,
88. generosity, kindness, and finally love to Ruth, an outcast,
redeems her, and has fellowship with her.
God9s redeeming love shown in this Old Testament story is a
foreshadow of God9s redeeming love in the New Testament in
which God sends His own son Jesus Christ to be mankind9s blood
redeemer. He sends Jesus Christ to save us because He loves
us. Jesus Christ9s love is a self-sacrificing love which He also
demands from us when He called upon His disciples to love each
other as He loved them.
This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have
loved you. John 15:12 KJV
These things I command you, that ye love one another. John
15:17 KJV
God9s redeeming love saves us from eternal death, the
consequence of our sins, through Jesus Christ, our Lord and
Savior, reconciles us with Him, makes us children of God, unites
us with Jesus Christ as our bridegroom and with the Body of
Christ, all believers in Jesus Christ, fills us with His Holy Spirit, the
seal of our salvation, and finally, gives us eternal life.
The love between Boaz and Ruth 3 between a Jew and Gentile 3
shows that God9s redeeming love unites both Jews and Gentiles
as one people in Jesus Christ.
89. Through Jesus9 self-sacrificing act of love on the cross, He
becomes the <blood redeemer= to all men and women of every
ethnicity in every age until the end of time.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have
everlasting life. John 3:16 KJV
Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all
iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good
works. Titus 2:14 KJV
But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his
Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive
the adoption of sons. Galatians 4:4-5 KJV
For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on
him the seed of Abraham.
Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his
brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in
things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the
people. Hebrew 2:16-17 KJV
For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body,
and in your spirit, which are God's. 1 Corinthians 6:20 KJV
90. Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with
corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation
received by tradition from your fathers;
But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish
and without spot: 1 Peter 1:18-19 KJV
15
As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay
down my life for the sheep.
16
And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I
must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one
fold, and one shepherd.
17
Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life,
that I might take it again.
18
No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have
power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This
commandment have I received of my Father.
John 10:15-18 KJV
Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life
for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 1
John 3:16 KJV

94. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that
loved us.
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor
principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate
us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:35-
39 KJV
Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail;
whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it
shall vanish away.
95. While love is only one of the attributes humans can have, God9s love
is not merely one of His attributes, it is the essence of His nature. God
is love.
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 1 John 4:8 KJV
And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love;
and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. 1 John 4:16
18
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and
unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
19
Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God
hath shewed it unto them.
28
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave
them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not
convenient;
29
Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness,
covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit,
malignity; whisperers,
30
Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil
things, disobedient to parents,
31
Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection,
implacable, unmerciful:
Jesus Christ on the cross to redeem us from eternal death, the
consequence of our sins.
98. 10
For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death
of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
Romans 5:6-10 KJV
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
God9s love is not only a forgiving love but also a redeeming love 3
one that saves us from eternal death, the consequence of our sins,
99. and gives us eternal life. This is something we don9t deserve but God
nevertheless gives it to us because He loves us so much and is so
gracious and merciful.
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins,
according to the riches of his grace; Ephesians 1:7 KJV
