source of information for students, faculty, and staff.
As a media specialist, it is very important to ensure
that all students have access to the information
available in the media center
The media specialist is a strong advocate for all
students and their journey to accessing information.
The students with disabilities need full access to the
media center as much as their counterparts and it is
important that media specialist advocate for them
and see that the resources are available for them in
the media center.
4. Assistive Technology – Assistive Technology helps to level
the playing field to allow both learning and physically
challenged students to succeed in the mainstream world,
creating normalcy and preserving self-esteem. (Source

There are some assistive technology products that can be
placed in the media center for students with disabilities.
The following are a list of those products:
SmartView 360 – It is a monitor that serves as magnifying
glass/mirror, students with visual limitations can use this
to zoom in on items in a room or on a computer.
Talking Book Player – will read the book for you.
Jaws 6.0 Pro – speaks the words as you navigate Windows
menus, screens, and the text of websites
5. Bookshare.org – an online library of digital
books for people with disabilities. Once the book
is downloaded it can then be read to the
student. Through the U.S. Department of
Education, all schools have access to bookshare.
Reading Machine – a website with 32 links that
helps struggling learners with reading and
writing. From story makers to synonym games,
this is a great resource that is available in the
media center.
