4. What is blood pressure?
Blood pressure is the pressure /force of circulating blood against the
walls of blood vessels as it flows through them.
Average blood pressure is 120/80 mm of hg
SYSTOLE: ventricular ejection /contraction
DIASTOLE: ventricular filling.
PULSE PRESSURE:
5. Pulse pressure
Pulse pressure is determined from 2 numbers of a blood pressure reading.
This is the pressure in the arteries between 2 heart beats.
So if the BP is120/80 mm of hg the pulse pressure is 40 mm of hg.
Generally a pulse pressure greater than 40 mm of hg is un healthy.
A pulse pressure >60 indicates heart disease especially in older adults
6. PURPOSE:
1. To measure systolic and diastolic pressure.
2. to note the condition of cardiac output and and blood volume.
3. Determine the clients baseline BP by reading medical record so that a
comparison can be made with each reading.
7. PRINCIPLES:
1. Explain procedure to client.
2. Provide privacy if needed.
3. Hand washing.
4. Ask the client about his last intake of beverages.
5. Ask the client to sit in a comfortable chair with back supported for
atleast 5 minutes before the reading.
6. Arm resing at chest height.
7. Select appropriate cuff size.
8. Cuff against the bare skin.
9. The cuff should not be too tiht and too loose
10. Sit with feet flat on the floor.
11. Inflating the cuff 20 millimeters more than systolic BP by palpatory
method to get an accurate measurement.
12. Pressure over the brachial artery is equally distributed by tying the
cuff 1 inch/ 2.5cm above anti cubital fossa.
8. Different sizes of BP cuff:
Arm circumference in cm/inches Recommended cuff size(width*length)
22-26 cm/8.7-10.2 inches 12*22 (small adult)
27-34 cm/10.6-13.4 inches 16*30 (adult)
35-44 cm/13.8-17.3 inches 16*36 (large adult)
45-52 cm/17.7-20.5 inches 16*42(extra large adult)
4*8 cm (newborns and premature infant)
6*12 cm(infants)
9*18 cm(older children)
