This is the current version of a presentation I've given to several Norwegian businesses in the last few months. I've really enjoyed meeting businesses with this material. Of course, the talks are adjusted depending on the needs of the people I'm speaking to and depending on what's happening in the blogosphere and the rest of the world. This presentation's in Norwegain.

Talk I gave to a seminar for Kulturnett Norge about how Web 2.0 and social, participatory media may impact communication in the museum, library and cultural sectors. Bergen on October 16, 2006. In Norwegian but you may get the drift even if you don't understand Norwegian as there are few words.

City Speak X: A Green City, A Cool City
Speaker: Jonathan McKinley
Rising expectations for space for leisure, recreation and sports
Hong Kong is surrounded by so much water and has so many green mountains, so does it really need more urban open space? How do we respond to the threats of global warming and air pollution? What is the meaning of “the urban heat island effect”? What is an “air ventilation assessment”? What value doesthe community place on open space? Is the demand for recreation and sport changing? Do we need a landscape vision and master plan? Is “green infrastructure” becoming more important than roads and railway lines in securing a sustainable built environment in Hong Kong?
Join experts, academics, planners, government officials and landscape architects in a discussion about how to stay cool in our city.
Designing Hong Kong is a not-for-profit organisation focused on sustainable urban planning. See: www.designinghongkong.com

Corpses, Fetuses And Zombies: The Dehumanization of Media Users in Science Fi...Jill Walker Rettberg
This paper aims to connect the trope of the human imprisoned and isolated by media as it is expressed in dystopic science fiction to its expressions in mainstream discourse. I draw upon theories of immersion and digital dualism, while analyzing the trope across science fiction literature and films as well as in popular media. Works discussed include Fahrenheit 451 (1953), The Matrix (1999), Wall-E (2008), Ready Player One (2011), Divergent (2013) and I Forgot My iPhone (2013). I find that media is frequently seen as a threat that dehumanizes its user, and that this is expressed by showing the human user as a corpse, as a fetus, as motionless or as zombie-like. Even works that show the human as in control of media occasionally make use of this trope, and understanding this cultural imaginary of humans and media can help us understand contemporary media use and discourse.

Talk given at "What are Digital Humanities?" at the University of Oslo, June 14, 2013.
A presentation of the ELMCIP Knowledge Base and the ways in which we've been working with visualization, and an addendum about alternative data sources for exploring what electronic literature - or the digital humanities - are. Most of the visualizations in this presentation and most of the slides themselves were made by Scott Rettberg.

I don't usually do powerpoints for teaching, but somehow I started doing one for the first lecture in DIKULT103, and so I ended up piling it down with examples to talk about. This may not be very useful without reading the first 60 or so pages of Manovich's Language of New Media.

I thought I knew what I was interested in, but after linking stories for a few months I could see that I was much more interested in science, archaeology, and issues of injustice than I had realized. More importantly, I began to value more highly my own point of view . In composing my link text every day I carefully considered my own opinions and ideas, and I began to feel that my perspective was unique and important.
