• Occurs due to environmental and genetic
factors. Can be aggravated by environmental
factors such as hot weather, dust and animal

• Can be due to skin being exposed to some form
of irritant, such as:
– Perfume, Jewellery, Soap, Detergent
• With irritant contact, skin can become red, itchy,
tender and may even burn or sting

• Emollients provide an ‘oily’ film over the surface of the skin
• Trap water, swell the stratum corneum and close the cracks.
