Bleeding disorders in children can occur due to blood type incompatibilities between mother and newborn. ABO incompatibility causes hemolysis of the newborn's red blood cells due to antibodies in the mother's blood. RH incompatibility occurs when an RH-negative mother has an RH-positive baby, putting future pregnancies at risk for hemolytic disease. Tests are done to identify the blood types and assess for anemia or jaundice. Treatment depends on severity but may involve phototherapy, exchange transfusions or medications.
