Blackwater USA is a private military contractor founded in 1997 by Erik Prince to provide training support to military and law enforcement organizations. It gained a reputation as the largest military company and was employed to provide security services for the US government in Iraq, though it was also involved in several controversial shooting incidents that killed Iraqi civilians. In 2007, Blackwater guards shot and killed 17 Iraqi civilians in Baghdad's Nisour Square, leading to investigations and calls to reduce reliance on private security contractors.
