This presentation looks at how the University for the Creative Arts learning technologists gather and share knowledge about each course throughout the year so the renewed template is created according to user demands, trends in technology, curriculum requirements and faculty/employer expectations with digital literacy.
Along with the locally built resources in the template, the presentation will also look at how the Blackboard Community Module Page is deployed - but centrally managed outside the course area to target subject specific learning resources – many belonging to the Library. As with all universities, library resources can be overwhelming if not managed correctly. By using subject specific library modules within a course/unit area, students are taken directly to relevant eStream broadcasts, eJournals, databases and no more getting lost and giving up on the library website. With this use of the community modules, the task of providing library resources directly within course/unit areas has finally become manageable, has empowered subject librarians and most importantly enhanced the student experience.
Moulding and integrating LMS practice to meet UCA's institutional needsMaria Tannant
'Moulding and integrating LMS/VLE practice to meet institutional needs' presents some of the methodologies and mechanisms employed by UCA's Learning Technologists to enable Library and Faculty staff to ‘centrally manage’ content residing in over 1000 courses and units collectively. It also looks at how the University for the Creative Arts audit e-learning activity and work collectively (with the help of Google) to share responsibility and take ownership of work processes.

Google Expeditions: Virtual Reality and the classroomZoetanya Sujon
As part of the inaugural event for Regent's University London's teaching exchange, this lecture introduces the role of VR in education, provides an overview of our experience of Google Expeditions and reports on key findings from participant observation and a survey of participants. Of the key findings, perhaps the most noteworthy is that students see things differently from academics and technologies, noting different points of success and signs of engagement. Related to this, Google Expeditions and VR inspired enthusiasm across the university but successful pedagogical innovation requires much more than just technological platforms

Finding Stuff: Making UCA Library Resources Discoverable in the University VL...Maria Tannant
Research produced from the University for the Creative Arts Student Experience Conference 2013 found students wanted to find UCA Library resources directly from their course area (in the University’s Learning Management System LMS which is currently Blackboard). Students also stated they responded better to visual icons - such as those used for mobile apps. Working closely with this feedback, Maria and the project team developed over fifty highly visual Library learning resources that can be pinned to a course or unit – and be centrally managed. This outcome has greatly reduced workload, duplication and the need to fix broken links in multiple courses/units.
Empower and Enhance with Blackboard Course Templates and Community Modules Maria Tannant
The presentation looks at the content given to UCA students and staff via the templates including a set of digital literacy skills for today’s creative professional (for students) - as well as digital pedagogy with learning activities and case studies (for staff). It demonstrates how the learning technologists gather and share knowledge about each course throughout the year so the renewed template is created according to user demands, trends in technology and curriculum requirements.
Along with the locally built resources in the template, the presentation also looks at how the Blackboard Community Module Page is deployed - but centrally managed outside the course area to target subject specific learning resources – many belonging to the Library. A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Editor's Notes
Image Credit: Holly Randall, BA (Hons) Textiles for Fashion & Interiors at Farnham UCA
UCA came about in 2007 with the merging of:
Kent Institute of Art & Design – KIAD
Surrey Institute of Art and Design
2 learning technologists have been in place since 2007
We have moved around since 2010…
Began in the Faculty of Learning & Teaching (until that was disbanded 2012)
Moved into the Library’s ‘Central Service’s department for 1 year
Currently in the Centre for Digital Scholarship (another Library Department)
Either way, we still do the same thing – enhance learning with technology and manage the VLE
Each of the 7 schools are scattered across all or some of the campuses
FE has courses in each location whereas
Architecture is taught at Canterbury and Farnham
Fashion at Epsom and Rochester….. As so on…
This logistical model means we work across all schools
Practice is very much a joined-up and agreed process.
Innovation is tried, tested and implemented
Successful outputs are often multiplied across courses through recommendations at school boards
Each year we audit every course’s engagement with learning technology
This is categorised by 4 distinct areas (see columns)
0 to 3 rating gives us an overview of the level of engagement (0 none, 3 extensive)
Comments are included where something is worth noting
Provides a snapshot of how the course uses the VLE and engaging with technology
Allows us to pinpoint activity in certain courses/units
Taking the data from the annual audit we provide each school with an e-learning report
Used to inform the annual academic monitoring report
We use them to help identify areas of support
The reports help courses discover how other courses engage with technology (allbeit a snapshot but enough to start conversations)
Being a specialist arts university, UCA has a rich provision of digital assets
This list shows the main ones but not all
As a consequence students can often feel overwhelmed and lost if they arrive directly to the library website
Helps advocate minimum requirements
Helps staff upload content in a more ordered and structured way
Helps with consistency across courses and units so both staff and students become familiar with a pattern of information finding
Prompts and guides staff where information should be located (esp. new staff and sessional lecturers)
Students arrive at university expecting to find everything they need from one central point… and get annoyed when this doesn’t happen

Module content is tailored to the course’s subject area
The bank of library modules cover the 12 creative disciplines taught at UCA
A oneClick approach has addressed student’s concerns about too many clicks in the VLE
Having direct links to library resources ensures students find them – last year’s library strategy was to make ‘Library Resources Discoverable’
Hopefully students have no more excuses for not finding the Library resources
The Library Modules are completely sustainable - as they are managed centrally by the Library
Being centrally located eliminates room for error and duplication, so the same module may be pinned to 10 courses and updated centrally in one place
The efficiency of Library Modules have strengthened relationships and opened doors between academics and the Library
The Learning Tools modules can be:
Updated centrally in Blackboard (not in the course areas) allowing all 1000 instances to be changed with one edit.
Induction videos can be placed at the top of the module at the beginning of the year and move to the bottom after Xmas
New tutorials/ learning packages can be featured very simply with immediate effect – using the announcement/course link tool to create awareness
Address new trends in technology/learning university wide
A reference point staff can direct students to – and a place staff can also learn!
Provides a basic tool-kit for our creative students – as needs dictate
Students get sense of value for money with the provision
Modules are created through planning and identifying need:
Approx. 60 modules shown here and managed by approx. 13 people
Letch's initially setup modules
70% modules are passed over to nominated departmental staff for administration
- Central Resources Technician – per campus
- Learning & Teaching Librarians
- Learning Development Tutors
Collaborative document provides:
A game plan and sense of order
A sense of ownership and responsibility
A snapshot of who’s doing what so people can work together building resources
Identifies shortfalls in subject areas
Much needed documentation for staff turnaround/organisational changes
