the cass, london metropolitan university takes its name from sir
john cass (1948 – 1718).
cass, a wealthy alderman of the city, set up an independent school
in aldgate. when he died in 1718, staining his quill feather with
blood, his intention to leave the entire estate to education was
upheld.
the sir john cass foundation was established and now touches upon
education in and around the city of london at almost every level,
ranking from primary education to postgraduate study and
representing a historical microcosm of the development of English
education over more than three centuries.
the red feather is a reminder of the institution’s historic city origins,
legacy and enduring purpose in making creative education available
to all.

”we had a brand new look to the studios – three completely new ones – bringing in ideas that asked for entrepreneurial and
enterprising concepts realising activist scenarios in and around london and the east end, where the interiors had a larger agenda
or community programme. we also looked at society in the future and how this would impact on our interior needs and
aesthetics.” kaye newman, head of cass interiors
the exhibition will feature work from students taking
undergraduate courses including animation, fashion, film, fine
art, furniture, graphic design, illustration, interiors, jewellery and
silversmithing, music technology, musical instruments,
photography, product design and textile design, as well as
extended degrees.

courses: there are three, three-year courses within cass interiors – interior design,
interior design & decoration and interior architecture & design. these courses are
defined because they are so broad and cover such different areas. one of the benefits of
these courses is that it teaches confidence in the students’ career paths.
interior architecture & design is more city-based, and explores how the architecture
relates to the city’s cultures and historical context – so is often traditional. in the first
year the class is taught together as a group, making sure the students have made the
right choices. students are encourages to use their own artwork in their work in order to
project their own style and ideas – this helps to differentiate them and show their
individual identities in their portfolios, to present how they communicate their ideas.
in the second year, there is work placement to gain contact with professional practices,
and get a feel of work as an architect or interior designer. the students get 80 hours
with a studio, elected by a teacher, in which they gain team-building skills. the teacher
chooses the studio best suited for the individual student by considering whether the
ambience of the studio is best for them. often 50% of students go back during the
summer to carry out internships because their experiences were so successful.
due to the economy booming, interior design work is booming, and the london met
course could possibly be one of the best out of the 50 courses showcasing at such
degree shows as free range.

facilities: within the interiors department there are 3 studios (3,4 &5). while working in these
studios on different projects, students use different methods of design such as computer softwares,
sketching or drawing, and the students decide what methods they prefer using for future projects.
students are encouraged to use a vast range of materials to widen their horizons – even ceramics
and sewing – to add meaning and a connection with somebody. the different studios focus on
developing concepts using their own techniques such as collage or 3d design.
materials: the students have a wide range of materials for creating their designs. students have
access to woodmills, metal workshops, ceramic workshops, silversmithing and jewellry, laser
cutters, digital facilities.
contact time: in the first year students get three, six hour session days a week where they are
expected to be in, with a tutor. tutors see how you are progessing through email and in direct,
always checking up on you.
after the course: with a 90% employment rate, students at the cass have easy access to external
links and opportunities at the end of their three year courses. 3rd year students have their work
mounted at degree shows, and instantly get recognition from employers, who come knowing what
they’re looking for. after the 3rd year, alumni can come back to study for a masters degree, and a
phd, as it is known that there is high competition for the best jobs, and london met work excels in
this field (in the top 10 of the country). the career paths are great and often include international
travel which is interesting because students meet loads of different people in different contexts.

The exhibition will feature work from students taking

course: the foundation course lasts one year, and is divided into three stages. The first stage is
composed of 3 sections - 3 weeks of drawing studies, 3 weeks in 2D and 3 weeks in 3D. The
course starts with everybody doing the same thing, I order to bring everyone together.
The second stage is very important – it is called transition studies. Projects are very open, and
students use them to get out of their comfort zone, and try different things – this includes
textiles, ceramics, building, fashion, fine art, film-making and more. Each project allows you to
change direction, and get an idea of the area which interest you most.
The last stage is a ‘final entry’ project, where you choose an area to work in, and during 7
weeks create your own work book and build your final piece. The course includes lots of
workshops, 4 modules – project (very open), technique (craft and craft school, different
materials), CCS (Critical and Contextual study) and work book.

facilities: students in the foundation course have access to all machinery and facilities as the
university undergraduate courses – ranging from ceramics, to jewellery to film making.
materials: especially in the second stage there are lots of workshops which cater to specific
disciplines such as interior design, and they stock a wide range of materials which would be
needed for that specific discipline. the workshops often do one – seven day projects with the
students.
contact time: like the undergraduate courses, the students have three, six hour days a week
contact time with the teachers, and the rest of the week is independent work and research with
access to the workshops during the days.
after a foundation year: most students stay at london met, although some go elsewhere in the
country, or others stay within london. the intention is that the students stay to study a more
specific course.

3d design
generally requires core art courses in drawing, design and art history. some
colleges offer concentrations in graphic design, animation, video game design,
web design or illustration. these programs provide instruction in visual
communication, multimedia, typography, 3-d imaging, digital photography, web
animation and illustration.
students are often required to complete a senior thesis or capstone project in
digital imaging and 3-d design. they also have the opportunity to develop a
professional physical or web-based portfolio to use to market themselves in the
workplace after graduation. completion of an internship is often a key
component of the program, helping students to gain the work experience that
employers highly value.
3-d design is a broad artistic field used for a variety of projects. possible careers include 3-d animator, 3-d graphic designer and
web designer. many industries utilize 3-d design, and employment demand is expected to increase.
the job duties of a 3d design artist vary by specific career. for example, 3-d animators use computers and specialized software, such
as maya and motionbuilder, to add movement to characters and objects. a 3-d graphic designer also uses specialized software, such
as cinema 4d, to create life-like images. these images are used to promote brands and products, illustrate books and magazines or
demonstrate a process, such as may be found in an online instruction manual. similarly, web designers incorporate 3-d imagery to
web content to add utility and appeal. 3-d designers also work in the areas of medical and scientific imaging, engineering and
broadcasting.
most careers in 3-d design require a bachelor's degree and knowledge of art and design principles. a bachelor of fine arts degree

frank gehry, born in 1929, studied at the university of southern
california school of architecture, and moved in 1956 to enroll at the
harvard graduate school of design.
after leaving harvard, frank gehry returned to california, making a name for himself with the launch of his "easy edges" cardboard
furniture line. the easy edges pieces, crafted from layers of corrugated cardboard, sold between 1969 and 1973. still primarily
interested in building rather than furniture design, gehry remodeled a home for his family in santa monica with the money earned
from easy edges. gehry's avant-garde design caught the attention of the architectural world, ultimately launching his career to new
heights. he began designing homes in southern california on a regular basis in the 1980s.
as gehry achieved celebrity status, his work took on a grander scale. his high-concept buildings, including the walt disney concert
hall in los angeles, the dancing house in prague and the guggenheim museum building in bilbao, spain, have become tourist
attractions in their own right. in 2011, unveiled his first skyscrapers, 8 spruce street in new york city, and the opus hong kong tower
in china. he then went on to create more innovative buildings such as sydney’s dr chau chak wing.
gehry was one of a number of contemporary architects pursuing this style, which, for years, has been particularly visible in
california. gehry is known for his choice of unusual materials as well as his architectural philosophy. his selection of materials such
as corrugated metal lends some of gehry's designs an unfinished or even crude aesthetic. this consistent aesthetic has made gehry
one of the most distinctive and easily recognizable designers of the recent past. critics of gehry’s work have charged, however, that
his designs are not thoughtful of contextual concerns and frequently do not make the best use of valuable urban space. frank gehry
is known for his professionalism and adherence to budgets, despite his complex and ambitious designs. a notable exception to this
successful budgeting was the walt disney concert hall project, which exceeded the budget by over a hundred and seventy million
dollars and resulted in a costly lawsuit.

one of his most famous buildings, the walt disney concert hall in los angeles,
california, is known for it’s distinctive shape and features. having known that the
building would be hosting grand orchestras and concerts, gehry especially designed
it to reflect it’s inner function on the outside of the structure. the short, separated
curls of sleek metallic surfaces suggest the captivating, exhilarating music from
inside the building, reflecting the individual notes of a song, and the fluidity of the
melody.
the use of the shiny metallic surface also represents the novelty of the music
that would be playing inside – this is supported by the fact that gehry is
known for his avant-garde approach.
it is also said that gehry was a fan of sailing, and that the distinctive shape of
the building could represent sails, and therefore a movement – much like the
previous idea of the fluidity of music.

hadid studied mathematic at the american university of beirut before moving to
london in 1972 to attend the architectural association school where she was
awarded the diploma priwe in 1977. she became a partner of the office for
metropolitan archiecture, taught at the aa, and later led her own studio at the
aa until 1987. since then she held the kenzo tange and the sullivan
professorship at such universities as harvard, illinois and chicago and many
more honours around the world in different universities.
in addition, hadid was named an honorary member of the american academy of
arts and letters and an honorary fellow of the american institute of architects.
she was on the board of trustees of the architecture foundation
the italian national museum of the 21st century arts in rome, the london
aquatics centre for the 2012 olympic games and the heydar aliyev centre in
baku are built manifestos of hadid’s quest for complex, fluid space.
previous buildings such as the rosenthal centre for contemporary art in
cincinnati and the guangzhou opera house in china have also been hailed as
architecture that transforms our ideas of the future with new spatial concepts
and dynamic, visionary forms.

the multifunctional theatre ‘new century city art centre’ in chengdu, china seats
up to 2,000 people, and caters to lyrical theatre and music events. the design
aims to resolve the complexities of the programme, while combining spatial
clarity with the design of a unique and iconic structure. the rippling geometry
suggests a rolling landscape, inspired by the topography of the sichuan
province. the building’s elongated design contrasts the vertical tower structures
surrounding the site, to create a strong impression. its soaring aerodynamic shape and yin yang shape evokes
traditional chinese symbolism, to relate to the culture’s origins. the lowest part,
the centre of the buildings, accommodates the main atrium. the head to the
north accommodates all performance and art related areas, and the tail to the
south hosts the conference centre and the exhibition centre.
the performance, arts and congress complex consolidate chengdu’s reputation
as a cultural destination while providing a distinctive architectural image for the
city. the architectural concept has been developed in response to articulate the
client’s programme and the urban parameters. the nccac thereby forms a
graceful, iconic landmark for the city of chengdu.
with its informal atmosphere and unrivalled views out across the landscaping,
nccac is one of the city’s great social spaces as well as a regional cultural centre
of international standing. geometrically, the shape has been derived by twisting
a rectangular tube, creating three distinct areas.

Architectur
egehry and hadid have many similarities and differences in
term of their style of architecture. while gehry works on the
contrast of angular and curvilinear shapes, hadid focused
on only cuvilinear shapes; she often based her projects on
the environment around her, which is what makes her
buildings so natural-looking, despite the ‘industrial’ choice
of materials.
gehry’s architecture is much more contemporary, as he explores the effect of contrasting shapes and forms within the structure. he
also tends to personalize his buildings by creating them in reflection of one of his interests – sailing – instead of designing them
around the designated site’s culture and background history like hadid.
what makes hadid’s work so natural is the almost anatomical aspects of her work, such as the al wakrah stadium in qatar, which
ressembles the moving muscles of a human body. the curving lines are also to do with the arab ‘dhou’ fishing boats of the coastal
city. other buildings were designed to emerse from the landscape, and their curvy form often reflect the valleys or hills of the
surrounding areas.
gehry’s building he designed for the sydney business school
in 2015 is not based on something as elegant as the rolling
hills of (zaha hadid building area in slide), but based on a
brown paper bag. using such normal every day objects, gehry
manages to find inspiration, and produce controversial
pieces of architecture, which quite surprisingly always
somehow suit the surrounding scenery.

Finding work experience in architecture: at this stage, the majority of your work
experience applications will be speculative. That means you’ll have to do all the
work. First of all, do your research. Use the RIBA directory of RIBA-chartered
practices to draw up a long list of practices (if you fancy looking for work
experience abroad, they also have a directory of international practices).
Finding jobs in architecture: many websites such as RIBA are used to search online
for available jobs in certain areas. On RIBA, employers post job availabilities on the
forum, specifying what specific qualifications applicants need, to which people can
apply.
Basic requirements:
o A desire to develop themselves professionally
o Passed RIBA Pt 3 exam
o Have excellent design skills and have experience in high-end residential
projects
o An enthusiasm for both residential architecture and quality design solutions
o An excellent command of English, both written and spoken
IT and other competencies:
o Ability to hand-draw and sketch to a decent standard
o Good command of CAD (Concept 8 Architects work in AutoCAD and Rhinoceros)
o Good command of office systems (Word, Excel) - essential
o Good presentation skills (Photoshop & In- design desirable)
o Good modelling skills (Sketch-up and/or other 3D-modelling packages desirable)

Employee duties and responsibilities in your average architecture firm: The practice has a growing workload of projects both in
Central London and Surrey. The candidate would be responsible for the day-to-day delivery of one or more of these projects,
reporting to an Associate Architect or Director. As a job runner there is a specific opportunity to see a major luxury new build
house which is due on site shortly. They will also be involved in an apartment scheme as well as various schemes at early design
stages. Typical duties are set out below, but will vary from project to project.
