This document describes the preparation of polyurethane-based biomaterials with anti-bacterial and anti-adhesive properties. Thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) were synthesized with varying hard and soft segment contents to achieve desired thermal and mechanical properties. Quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) were also synthesized and will be grafted onto the TPUs to impart anti-bacterial and anti-adhesive functionality. Characterization of the synthesized TPUs and QAS confirmed their structures. The TPUs demonstrated high thermal stability and sufficient mechanical properties. Future work will test the anti-microbial efficiency and anti-adhesive effects of QAS-grafted TPUs.
