civilization, humans have relied
on plants for survival. Even
today plants influence almost
everything we do either
directly or indirectly. They are
the one source of food, fuel,
clothes and medicines
What is
 It is an ECO-FRIENDLY , CLEAN
Alternative diesel fuel that is derived
form oils and fats of plants like
sunflower, soya and jatropha.
 These natural oils when processed
show striking similarities to petroleum
derived diesel.
 It can be directly used or blended
with diesel.
HISTORY OF
BIODIESEL
This concept dates back to 1885 when
Dr.Rudolf Diesel built the first diesel engine
with full intension of running it on vegetative
source. He first displayed his engine at a Paris
show at 1900 and astounded everyone when he
ran the patented engine on Peanut oil.

MADE….?
The process of converting
vegetable oil into biodiesel
fuel is called
TRANSESTERFICATION
and it is luckily less
complex then it sounds..
ADVANTAGES OF
BIODIESEL
Biodiesel is green. It is biodegradable and
non-toxic
Biodiesel is more lubricating than diesel
fuel. It also increases the life cycle of the
engine
Horrible exhaust fumes are
replaced by pleasant smell of
popcorn.
Replaces imported
petroleum
Biodiesel can be used directly i.e.
without changing the machinery of the
vehicle
Reduces the fuel cost. Biodiesel is
cheaper to produce than petroleum
diesel.

of biodiesel
 North America is the 2nd largest
producer and consumer of biodiesel.

INDIA
 India currently has 5 large plants, set
up with a capacity of 300,000 litres
per day, 4 medium size plants, with a
capacity of 30,000 litres per day, and
a number of small plants, with a
capacity of 1,000 to 3,000 litres per
day.
To set up a biodiesel plant, you should have your
own Jatropha plantation. Vegetable Oil is currently
not easily available. To set up 1,000 litres per
day plant, you need a plantation in 200 hectares.
Such a large patch of land is not available in
India as one piece. Hence they have to collect
seeds from a number of farmers.
Practically all plants are running at very low
capacities, or closed due to lack of Jatropha oil
and other vegetable oil.
Why Biodiesel is not used on larger scale in
India….???
GOVERNMENT
POLICIES
 Government is making efforts to grow
jatropha and other raw material on
waste lands
 The government has signed up 5,000
farmers representing 1,000 hectares of
land.
 According to the report, India needs
400,000 hectares of jatropha and other
raw material in 22 of India's 28 states
CONCLUSION
As a substitute for polluting and fast
depleting fossil fuel, biodiesel has come to
stay. In future, it should also serve to
reduce and maintain the price of
automobile fuel. With consistent and
coordinated efforts of scientist and
government, wide use of biodiesel in our
country is going to be a reality in the days
to come.

  • 21.  India currently has 5 large plants, set up with a capacity of 300,000 litres per day, 4 medium size plants, with a capacity of 30,000 litres per day, and a number of small plants, with a capacity of 1,000 to 3,000 litres per day.
  • 22. To set up a biodiesel plant, you should have your own Jatropha plantation. Vegetable Oil is currently not easily available. To set up 1,000 litres per day plant, you need a plantation in 200 hectares. Such a large patch of land is not available in India as one piece. Hence they have to collect seeds from a number of farmers. Practically all plants are running at very low capacities, or closed due to lack of Jatropha oil and other vegetable oil. Why Biodiesel is not used on larger scale in India….???
