COMPENSATOR DESIGN
By
Eng Emmanuel Omongo
emmanuelomongo@gmail.com
Introduction
• There are three types of compensators; lead, lag and lag-lead
compensators.
• Compensators can be realized by electrical, mechanical, Pneumatic,
hydraulic and other components.
• In this lecture, we will discuss the realization of these compensators
by electrical RC networks.
• We will also obtain their frequency response characteristics which are
useful in their design.
Lead Compensator
• The pole zero configuration of a lead compensator is as given in figure
below.
• The transfer function of a lead compensator is given by,
• This transfer function can be realized by an RC network shown in
figure below.
The transfer function of the network is given by;
• Comparing the above equation
• Since 𝛼 < 1, it is a lead compensator. Given the time constant τ and
the d.c gain 𝛼 of the network the three components of RC network
namely R1, R2 and C have to determined. To obtain the frequency
response of the network, we have
• This means that the network produces an attenuation of 𝛼 , and this
d.c attenuation has to be cancelled by using an amplifier of gain 𝐴 =
1
𝛼
thus the compensating network takes the form as shown in figure
below.
• Thus, the sinusoidal transfer function of the lead network is given by;
• Under the steady conditions the output of this network leads the
input and hence this network is known as a lead network.
• The bode plot of equation is shown in the figure below.
The above equation can be written as;
Solving for 𝜶 ,we get
• The lead compensator is required to provide the necessary angle at
the gain crossover frequency, to obtain the required phase margin.
• Knowing the value of required angle ∅𝑚 to be provided by the
network, 𝛼 parameter can be obtained. The value of 𝛼 required to get
a maximum phase lead ∅𝑚 is tabulated.
• From the table it can be seen that for obtaining larger phase angles, 𝛼
has to be reduced to very low value. For very low values of 𝛼 the pole
of the lead network is located far away from the 𝑗𝜔 axis and from the
Bode magnitude diagram it can be seen that the network has a large
gain of 20 log
1
𝛼
db at high frequencies.
• Then the high frequency noise signals are amplified and signal to
noise ratio becomes very poor. Hence it is not desirable to have low
values 𝛼.
• A value of 𝛼 = 0.1 is considered to be suitable. When large phase
angles are desired, two lead networks in cascade may be used.
Lag Compensator
• The transfer function of a lag compensator is given by,
𝛽 > 1 ,Ensures that the pole is to the right of the zero.
• The pole zero configurations is given in figure below,
• The RC network realization is shown in the figure below,
• The sinusoidal transfer function is given by;
• The d.c gain of this network is unity and hence no d.c amplifier is
required as in the case of a lead network.
• The Bode Plot diagram is given below;
• Under steady state conditions the output of the network lags the
input and therefore this network is known as a lag network.
• The maximum phase lag ∅𝑚 is again obtained from the equation and
frequency at which it occurs, replacing 𝛼 by 𝛽.
• At high frequencies the network produces an attenuation of 20 log 𝛽
and hence signal to noise ratio is improved by this network.
Lag-Lead Compensator
• The general form of the transfer function of lag lead compensator is;
• Transfer function given by eqn. can be realized by an RC network as
shown in figure below.
• The transfer function of this network can be derived as;
Therefore we can write 𝐺𝑐(𝑠) as;
• The Bode plot is shown in figure below,
Cascade Compensation in Frequency Domain Using Bode
Plots
• In order to design a compensator using Bode plot, the specifications
are to be given in frequency domain.
• If specifications are given in time domain, they can be easily
converted into frequency domain using time and frequency domain
correlations.
• The frequency domain Specifications are usually given by:
Phase margin ∅𝑚 or peak resonance 𝑀𝑟 which indicates relative
stability.
Bandwidth 𝜔𝑏 or resonance frequency 𝜔𝑟, which indicates rise time
or settling time.
Error constants which indicates steady state error.
• The design is carried out in the frequency domain using Bode plots; the
time response of the compensated system must be obtained to check
the time response specifications.
• This is necessary because the time and frequency domain specifications
are correlated under the assumption that the compensated system is of
second order, or it has a pair of dominant closed loop poles.
• Based on the time response characteristics. The design may be altered
suitably.
• The frequency domain method of design is easy to apply but the time
response specifications cannot be directly controlled in this method.

Biocontrol Systems Lecture - compensator.pptx

  • 1. COMPENSATOR DESIGN By Eng Emmanuel Omongo emmanuelomongo@gmail.com
  • 2. Introduction • There are three types of compensators; lead, lag and lag-lead compensators. • Compensators can be realized by electrical, mechanical, Pneumatic, hydraulic and other components. • In this lecture, we will discuss the realization of these compensators by electrical RC networks. • We will also obtain their frequency response characteristics which are useful in their design.
  • 3. Lead Compensator • The pole zero configuration of a lead compensator is as given in figure below. • The transfer function of a lead compensator is given by,
  • 4. • This transfer function can be realized by an RC network shown in figure below. The transfer function of the network is given by;
  • 5. • Comparing the above equation • Since 𝛼 < 1, it is a lead compensator. Given the time constant τ and the d.c gain 𝛼 of the network the three components of RC network namely R1, R2 and C have to determined. To obtain the frequency response of the network, we have
  • 6. • This means that the network produces an attenuation of 𝛼 , and this d.c attenuation has to be cancelled by using an amplifier of gain 𝐴 = 1 𝛼 thus the compensating network takes the form as shown in figure below. • Thus, the sinusoidal transfer function of the lead network is given by;
  • 7. • Under the steady conditions the output of this network leads the input and hence this network is known as a lead network. • The bode plot of equation is shown in the figure below.
  • 8.
  • 9. The above equation can be written as;
  • 10. Solving for 𝜶 ,we get
  • 11. • The lead compensator is required to provide the necessary angle at the gain crossover frequency, to obtain the required phase margin. • Knowing the value of required angle ∅𝑚 to be provided by the network, 𝛼 parameter can be obtained. The value of 𝛼 required to get a maximum phase lead ∅𝑚 is tabulated.
  • 12. • From the table it can be seen that for obtaining larger phase angles, 𝛼 has to be reduced to very low value. For very low values of 𝛼 the pole of the lead network is located far away from the 𝑗𝜔 axis and from the Bode magnitude diagram it can be seen that the network has a large gain of 20 log 1 𝛼 db at high frequencies. • Then the high frequency noise signals are amplified and signal to noise ratio becomes very poor. Hence it is not desirable to have low values 𝛼. • A value of 𝛼 = 0.1 is considered to be suitable. When large phase angles are desired, two lead networks in cascade may be used.
  • 13. Lag Compensator • The transfer function of a lag compensator is given by, 𝛽 > 1 ,Ensures that the pole is to the right of the zero. • The pole zero configurations is given in figure below,
  • 14. • The RC network realization is shown in the figure below,
  • 15. • The sinusoidal transfer function is given by; • The d.c gain of this network is unity and hence no d.c amplifier is required as in the case of a lead network.
  • 16. • The Bode Plot diagram is given below;
  • 17. • Under steady state conditions the output of the network lags the input and therefore this network is known as a lag network. • The maximum phase lag ∅𝑚 is again obtained from the equation and frequency at which it occurs, replacing 𝛼 by 𝛽. • At high frequencies the network produces an attenuation of 20 log 𝛽 and hence signal to noise ratio is improved by this network.
  • 18. Lag-Lead Compensator • The general form of the transfer function of lag lead compensator is; • Transfer function given by eqn. can be realized by an RC network as shown in figure below.
  • 19. • The transfer function of this network can be derived as;
  • 20. Therefore we can write 𝐺𝑐(𝑠) as;
  • 21. • The Bode plot is shown in figure below,
  • 22. Cascade Compensation in Frequency Domain Using Bode Plots • In order to design a compensator using Bode plot, the specifications are to be given in frequency domain. • If specifications are given in time domain, they can be easily converted into frequency domain using time and frequency domain correlations. • The frequency domain Specifications are usually given by: Phase margin ∅𝑚 or peak resonance 𝑀𝑟 which indicates relative stability. Bandwidth 𝜔𝑏 or resonance frequency 𝜔𝑟, which indicates rise time or settling time. Error constants which indicates steady state error.
  • 23. • The design is carried out in the frequency domain using Bode plots; the time response of the compensated system must be obtained to check the time response specifications. • This is necessary because the time and frequency domain specifications are correlated under the assumption that the compensated system is of second order, or it has a pair of dominant closed loop poles. • Based on the time response characteristics. The design may be altered suitably. • The frequency domain method of design is easy to apply but the time response specifications cannot be directly controlled in this method.
