JACOB’S PILLOW PRESENTS
BILL T. JONES/ARNIE ZANE DANCE COMPANY
IN STORY/TIME
A NEW DANCE WORK INSPIRED BY JOHN CAGE
PART OF THE COMPANY’S 30TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR
July 25, 2012–(Becket, MA) Jacob’s Pillow presents Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company in the new
work Story/Time, created by acclaimed Tony Award-winner and legendary performer, Artistic
Director Bill T. Jones. Inspired by composer John Cage’s “Indeterminacy” (1958), Jones explores
new choreographic territory in this dance theatre work in which he narrates onstage, as his revered
company performs. Jones integrates text and spoken word with live music and choreography using
chance procedure to create a unique work that The San Francisco Chronicle calls, “a dance theater
rollercoaster with surprises around every corner.” As part of its 30th anniversary tour through the
U.S. and Europe, the company will perform Story/Time July 25–29 in the Ted Shawn Theatre.
“Bill T. Jones is one of the great dancers of all time, a break-through choreographer and director
both for his own company and major award-winning Broadway shows, a provocative thinker, a
creative force—which is why we were proud to present him with the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award in
2010,” stated Ella Baff, Executive and Artistic Director of Jacob’s Pillow. “Another of Bill’s gifts is his
beautiful, commanding voice, whether singing or speaking, and he is the narrator of a new movie
about dance and Jacob’s Pillow called Never Stand Still. In Story/Time, we hear and see Bill on
stage throughout the show, inviting us in with a grab-bag of mini-stories he has written, while his
company unleashes athletic, dramatic moves with full throttle commitment.”
The prevailing image of Story/Time is Jones narrating onstage from an assortment of randomly-
selected one-minute short stories that are accompanied by intermittently synchronized periods of set
choreography and structured improvisation, as well as live music by composer Ted Coffey. This
timely work is a nod to “Indeterminacy” by the pioneering modernist composer John Cage, as 2012
marks the centennial of Cage’s birth. Similar to “Indeterminacy,” Story/Time is directed by chance
procedure, using Random.org, a random number-generating service, to determine the selection of
stories and the order in which they are read. As a result, no two shows are alike, rendering every
performance a one-of-a-kind opportunity. The work consists of 70 one-minute stories, written by
Jones himself, and provides significant insight into his life and career beyond the stage. Story/Time
manifests Jones’s initiative to explore different choreographic approaches, making this work unlike
any of his past productions, and one which Robert Johnson of Dance Magazine renders “wondrously
original.”
2. Bill T. Jones was awarded the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award in 2010, joining other visionary recipients
including Merce Cunningham, Alonzo King, and Crystal Pite. Bill T.Jones/Arnie Zane Dance
Company has performed at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival numerous times, most recently in 2008
and 2010.
Bill T. Jones, a choreographer, dancer, theater director, and writer, is one of the most celebrated
and influential artists of his generation. In addition to creating works for his own company, he has
also choreographed for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Boston Ballet, and Lyon Opera Ballet,
among others. A recipient of the 1994 MacArthur “Genius” Award and named “An Irreplaceable
Dance Treasure” by the Dance Heritage Coalition in 2000, Jones was inducted into the American
Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2009; he was most recently awarded Kennedy Center Honors in
2010 and the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award that same year. He is the winner of the 2010 Tony Award
for Best Choreography in the critically acclaimed FELA!, the musical which he co-conceived, co-
wrote, directed and choreographed. Jones also earned a 2007 Tony Award for Best Choreography
in Spring Awakening, as well as an Obie Award for the show’s 2006 Off-Broadway run. His
choreography for the Off-Broadway production The Seven earned him a 2006 Lucille Lortel Award.
In 2011, Jones was named Executive Artistic Director of New York Lives Arts, a collaborative
program between his company and Dance Theater Workshop.
Now in its 30th year, the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company was born out of eleven-year
collaboration between Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane (1948–1988). During this time, they redefined
the duet form and foreshadowed issues of identity, form, and social commentary that would change
the face of American dance. Today, the nine-member company has performed worldwide in over
200 cities in 40 countries on every major continent and is recognized as one of the most innovative
and powerful forces in the dance theatre world. In 2011, the company merged with Dance Theater
Workshop to form New York Live Arts.
Ted Coffey makes acoustic and electronic chamber music, interactive installations, and songs. His
work has been presented in concerts and festivals across North America, Europe and Asia. His
writings on the aesthetics and social politics of transmissive networks in the arts have received
awards from the Josephine De Kármán and Andrew W. Mellon Foundations. He is currently an
Associate Professor at the University of Virginia, where he teaches courses in composition, music
technologies, critical theory, and pop. This is Coffey's first collaboration with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie
Zane Dance Company.

Jacob’s Pillow, celebrating its 80th Anniversary Festival in 2012, is a National Historic Landmark, recipient of the National Medal of
Arts, and home to America's longest running international dance festival. The Festival includes more than 50 national and
international dance companies and 300 free and ticketed performances, talks, tours, classes, exhibits, and events. The School at
Jacob’s Pillow, one of the most prestigious professional dance training centers in the U.S., encompasses the diverse disciplines of
Ballet, Cultural Traditions, Contemporary, and Jazz/Musical Theatre Dance, as well as an Intern Program in various departments of
arts administration and production. The Pillow’s extensive Archives, open year-round to the public, chronicle more than 80 years of
dance in photographs, programs, books, costumes, audiotapes, and video. Year-round Community Programs enrich the lives of
children and adults through public classes, residencies in area schools, and more than 200 free public events. Through Jacob’s
Pillow Curriculum in Motion®, a nationally-recognized program, artist-educators work with Berkshire County teachers and students
grades K-12, transforming existing curricula such as biology, literature, and history into kinesthetic and creative learning
experiences. Creative Development Residencies, in which dance companies are invited to live and work at the Pillow and enjoy
unlimited studio time; choreography commissions; and the annual $25,000 Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award all support visionary
dance artists and choreographers. Virtual Pillow is aimed at expanding global audiences for dance and offers the opportunity to
experience dance and Jacob's Pillow from anywhere in the world via online interactive exhibits, global video networks, and mobile
social media. As part of the Virtual Pillow initiative, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Interactive, is a curated online video collection of dance
highlights from 1936 to today. On March 2, 2011, President Obama honored Jacob’s Pillow with a National Medal of Arts, the
highest arts award given by the United States Government. Jacob’s Pillow is the first dance presenting organization to receive this
prestigious award. For more information, visit www.jacobspillow.org.
