Digital program book for the 2022 Bloomington Early Music Festival: Celebrating Women in Early Music! May 22-27: Visit www.blemf.org for more info and to watch the free concerts!
ALL EVENTS ARE FREE & OPEN TO ALL.
BLEMF 2022 is dedicated to celebrating women in early music, highlighting the presence, influence, and artistry of women across nine centuries of musical culture and music-making. From the convents of the medieval period through the salons of the early 19th century, women participated in music as composers, performers, poets, patrons, and listeners; from positions of political, religious, and social power; in front of audiences and behind the scenes.
BLEMF 2022 gives such women the stage—those long-remembered and those only recently rediscovered—to bring the music they made in their time to our audiences today.

24. It's in me.
It's in the trees and on the ground.
It's even in the children on the merry-go-round.
We hear it when the wind blows 'round.
We hear it when the storm begins to pound.
We hear it in the thunder, in the lightening and when the rain falls to the ground.
We hear it in the silence of winter's white blanket of snow. We hear it when the ducks and geese must go.
We hear it in the silence just before the morning's dawn. We even hear it from the deer's first fawn.
We hear it when the birds and the lizards sing.
We hear it when the church bells ring.
We hear it when our friends and neighbors talk. We even hear it when the animals walk.
We hear it when we stomp in a puddle. We hear it when we splash in the tub.
We hear it when the beeeeessssssss are in a huddle. We hear it when the bear talks to her cub.
If we listen, we hear it all through the day and night time too.
If we listen, really listen, we hear it in everything we do. Do you know what "It" is?

and buyer for Paul Stuart and Ermenegildo Zegna. In 1997, he moved to Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he
owned a Bed and Breakfast for over a decade. He is now a Unitarian Universalist chaplain, and performs weddings
for couples gay and straight! He loves supporting his husband in all his musical endeavors, and singing with him
whenever they can. In 2011, he and Jon recorded their first CD- "Legally Married, and the Sky Didn't Fall!"

Studies with Judi Dazzio
Renee Benson was born in New York City and raised in Queens, New York. Her love of art was fostered from an
early age by her mother, Renee Foucault, an award winning painter who showed her work in Long Island, New
York City and St. Petersburg, Florida. Throughout her life. Renee was exposed to a variety of painting styles and
the influence of her mother is evident in her own work.
Renee graduated from New York University with a B.S. degree from the School of Education. After her marriage,
she moved to New Jersey where she had a long career as a high school art teacher. While she was a teacher, she
continued her professional development in painting taking classes at Pratt Institute of Art, The School of Visual Art
and Parson’s School of Design. She received her MFA from Kean University in Union, New Jersey.
Vivid bold colors and a unique approach to her subject, makes Renee’s paintings easily recognizable. She likes to
paint direct, using big brushes and her whole arm. She is interested in creating a painting surface that is
energized and visually exciting.
After retiring from teaching five years ago, she and her husband moved to St. Pete Beach, Florida, where she lives
in her parent’s house surrounded by her mother’s paintings. In Florida, she studies with Judith Dazzio and finally
has the time to devote full time to her art.

Title: B Flat after a Henri Matisse Painting 16" x 20"
Media: Arcylic
I first started painting as "self taught" in oil and watercolor. My "Grandma Moses
moment" occurred when Judi Dazzio of the Dazzio Art Experience accepted me as
a student in 2015 and introduced me to Acrylics and other media which I had not
previously considered.
This particular painting was developed during the study of Henri Matisse. I was
inspired with his use of color and his expressive paintings which revolutionized
modern art and impressionism.
My art has provided me with a real sense of creativity and much fun in my
retirement years

ARTIST STATEMENT
My appreciation for art was inspired by the paintings in museums that I visited during my travels in France, Italy, Holland, Belgium and England.
I received the impetus to turn my love of painting into a sole pursuit, while studying with Frank Arcuri, a renowned Bucks County artist. He
taught the dramatic “Chiaroscuro” effect seen in the old European paintings.

Born in the picturesque foothills of New
York’s Adirondack Mountains, with
Acadian French influence, Jim Theriault
(pronounced Tare-e-o) was surrounded
by his mother’s artistic talents. Her
paintings of colored portraits from black
& white photos as well as fiber art and
decorative painting, gave his childhood
home continuous artistic flavor. As a
young professional, he created
mechanical line drawings for retirement
plaques and advertising, which are in the
permanent archives in Kodak.
Currently a resident of St. Petersburg,
Florida. He was primarily self-taught, Jim
is an emerging artist who is currently
studying at The Dazzio Art Experience
with Judith Dazzio. With both Acrylic
and Figure Painting class experience, his
desire is to fashion abstract art (his love)
which mingles with reality. Jim does
this by using his own intuitive style,
bringing his creativity to the canvas.
“If my paintings depict any kind of
emotion from the viewer, I am
successful.”

41. JUDY VIENNEAU
ARTIST’S STATEMENT & BIOGRAPHY
My work explores the world of three-dimensional mixed media sculpture with a finely tuned graphic
sensibility. The twisted representational wire forms are infused with a bold linear thrust, informed with a
commentary on contemporary times.
By combining training in traditional sculptural techniques in metal, clay and stone with a concurrent
background in graphic design and illustration, I have achieved vibrant incidents in three-dimensional
space where the line is paramount. This supremacy of graphic purity is achieved by using a single piece
of wire twisted to fashion portraits, dancers and three-dimensional vignettes which recall the primal
punch of works by Picasso and Calder. Some of the wire forms are painted upon completion, others not. I
also enjoy the play between different media, and combine different techniques in a wide range of two and
three dimensional mixed media pieces.

42. Sean Young
“Diggin in the Crates” blends pop art, music, and vivid color to
illustrate influential African-American jazz artists and their influence on hip
hop. One of the best experiences a hip-hop fan can have is listening to an
album over the years and hearing a loop that you thought was original,
only to eventually discover the older jazz song it was sampled from. That
discovery leads to a “dig” about that artist, their life, and the culture and
politics of their time.
Each artist portrayed had moments of manic energy that I think
contributed to their genius and I use my canvas to celebrate that energy.
Viewers will find a visual “Map Key” on various paintings that reference
personal attributes of the artists. They are left undefined to allow for self-
discovery.
Precision is important to my style of art, which begins with a MacBook
Pro, a pen tablet and a rare photograph. I digitally construct deep
shadows, contrasted by bold color palettes and imaginative backgrounds
until I find a combination that tells a piece of the subject’s story. The
designs are converted to laser-cut stencils and hand-painted on canvas in
layers to create depth and texture. I use acrylic paints, spray paints,
lacquers and various media. The original works are 30x40.
43. IMAGINE
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace, you
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world,
you
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
- John Lennon, 1971
