What is the Big 3?
• The Big 3 model is designed for younger children grades
K-3rd. This model is a simplified version of the Big 6
research model. The Big 6 contains 6 steps whereas the
Big 3 only contains three. The Big 3 helps the younger
children learn how to conduct research. The three steps
that create the Big 3 are:
• Plan in the beginning
• Do in the middle
• Review in the end
• What is my job?
• What information do I
need to find?
• Where can I find the
information?
• How will I know if my
work is good?
• What is my plan?
Plan
• I will find the information
needed for the job.
• I can put the information
together to make sense.
• I may read from books, use
the computer, take notes, and
draw pictures.
• I will cite my sources of
information.
Do
• Did I complete the job?
• Do I feel great about my
work?
• Have I proofread to make
sure it is correct?
• Is there anything else that
needs to be done?
• What will I do differently next
time?
• Did I use my own words?
Review
‘
Why should I choose the Big 3 for
my classroom?
• The Big 3 teaches students the process of researching.
• It helps the students transition to the Big 6 model as they
advance in their skills.
• The Big 3 and Big 6 models were created by the same
people Mike Eisenberg and Bob Berkowitz.
• The Big 3 encourages students in conducting research.
• My own personal reflection in using the Big 3.
Advantages of using the Big 3
• Transition more easily to the Big 6 model.
• Research is more efficient in the upper grades.
• Able to use across different content areas.
Lesson Plan Using the Big 3
The lesson plan was created in collaboration by 2nd grade teachers to teach the
students about dinosaurs. The Students conducted research on a dinosaur of their
choice and its habitat. The teachers used the steps in the Big 3 model to teach the
students how to conduct their research. The steps were written within the PowerPoint
that the students followed for their activity. The steps were explained before each
section of the research part it referred to. This lesson plan is an excellent example in
how to incorporate the Big 3 into your teaching.
