Sea turtles live in the sea but breathe air. They can quickly refill their lungs with a single explosive exhalation and rapid inhalation when surfacing. Their lungs are adapted to permit fast oxygen exchange and avoid gas trapping during deep dives. Green and loggerhead turtles typically dive for 4-5 minutes and surface to breathe for 1-3 seconds during routine activity.
