The San Francisco Great Streets Project aims to transform city streets into vibrant public spaces through demonstration projects. It works with leaders to test placemaking strategies like widening sidewalks, adding bike lanes and pedestrian plazas. These trials help officials identify effective approaches to institutionalize citywide, like those seen internationally in Copenhagen, Paris, Barcelona and London. San Francisco has implemented several successful street improvement trials and has plans for more.
