The new Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City's Meatpacking District houses 220,000 square feet of gallery space, special exhibition areas, and public programs across six floors above ground and two below. Designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop and Cooper, Robertson & Partners, the steel-clad building sits next to the High Line and features a flood mitigation system to protect it from future extreme weather events like Superstorm Sandy, which flooded the site. This system includes a massive flood gate that helps safeguard the museum's spaces.
