Europe is a large peninsula mostly surrounded by seas and connected to Asia. It has natural borders of the Arctic Ocean to the north, Asia to the east, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. Most Europeans live on plains that are ideal for human activity, though the plains and mountains have been modified. European rivers are grouped into five watersheds depending on whether they flow into the Arctic, Atlantic, Mediterranean, Black Sea, or Caspian Sea. Most of Europe has a temperate climate, while some areas have a cold climate, and vegetation varies with the climate. There are oceanic, Mediterranean, and continental temperature climates, as well as polar and mountain cold climates.
