Presentation about an experiment to introduce more randomness into my life. These slides accompany a five minute presentation to a class on the design of behavioral health interventions. Concepts covered by the intervention include Durkheimian Network theory, commitment and consistency, cognitive dissonance, and gamification. Learning outcomes form a qualitative analysis of a personal journal.

¿Cómo se materializa la arquitectura representativa de la nueva Nación Chilena luego de la independencia? Bajo esta pregunta surge la investigación “Materialización del espacio político. Análisis de los primeros símbolos arquitectónicos del Chile independiente” (2015-2016), la cual investiga desde una perspectiva arquitectónica y constructiva-sismoresistente los tres edificios emblemáticos de los tres poderes del Estado de Chile. La investigación fue desarrollada en el marco del proyecto FONDECYT iniciación n°11130628 “Rediscovering Vernacular Earthquake-resistant Knowledge: Identification and analysis of built best practice in Chilean masonry architectural heritage” de la académica de la Universidad de Chile Natalia Jorquera Silva.
Así, el presente documento corresponde a un extracto de los antecedentes históricos y análisis constructivo del Palacio de Tribunales de Justicia, hito dentro de la ciudad de Santiago y uno de los más grandes representantes de las relaciones entre arquitectura, política y poder en Chile. Estos antecedentes, antes dispersos, se reúnen en esta tesis a modo de compendio de diversas visiones del edificio, su historia y su materialización.
En este sentido, este documento pretende difundir a la sociedad los resultados de la investigación, poniendo en valor tanto la dimensión histórica como técnica del gran patrimonio que representa el Palacio de Tribunales, para la ciudad de Santiago y sus habitantes.

They began by brainstorming ideas and conducting a survey of team members to determine interest and preferred topics. They then developed a "Choose Your Own Adventure" story using the Hero's Journey framework to present the nutrition content. Two presentation methods - the story and modeling - were tested. Results showed an increase in knowledge for most topics for the story group, but low completion of post-tests overall and an inability to gather qualitative feedback. Moving forward, they plan to create an educational video and handouts using modeling and will rethink their theoretical approaches and presentation methods.

Participants were randomly assigned to groups that received different daily walking prompts. They completed daily surveys about their walk and pre/post surveys on enjoyment and confidence in walking. Results showed both groups' enjoyment of 5-minute walks increased but more controlled studies are needed. Limitations included not excluding already active participants. Future work could improve recruitment screening and individualize the interventions.

Behavior change intervention

While the intervention helped her start running regularly, she remains unmotivated and plans to try it longer to form a habit, seeking new ways to stay motivated.
DIY: Playing the Drums
This document outlines a DIY project where the author strived to improve their drum playing skills through goal setting, self-monitoring, and incorporating social elements. They set goals to practice daily, learn a new skill each day, and play with others 3 times a week. Through tracking their practice time and insights, the author was able to increase their average daily practice time from 15 minutes to 31 minutes and play more regularly. They concluded that the combination of goals, self-monitoring, and social accountability helped the intervention succeed in improving their drum skills.
Cat Crinigan
Catherine created a chart to track her sleep with a goal of 7 hours per night in order to feel less sick, especially at the end of the week. She found that closely monitoring her sleep time helped her get closer to 7 hours per night, though weekends were still difficult to control. Overall, keeping the chart made her more aware of how her sleep, diet, and vitamin intake influenced her health.

This graph shows the total number of extra daily walks taken by different groups as the number of extra daily walks per person increases from 0 to 5. The "Walk Only" group sees a linear increase in total extra walks as each additional person walks more each day. The "Quote" groups, which include both walkers and non-walkers, see a slower sub-linear increase as not all members of the group increase their daily walks.
Behavior change intervention
The document describes a behavior change intervention study that used a randomized controlled trial design to test an intervention encouraging eating more fruits and vegetables and walking more steps. The intervention group received reminders and encouragement through a wearable device and text messages to share progress and praise friends, while the control group did not receive these. The intervention had decent initial response but high attrition, and only half of participants actively used the wearable device due to some technical limitations.

Participants felt the text messages could help them maintain mindful eating habits long-term.
10 Deep Breaths
The document describes a study that tested using SMS messages to encourage participants to practice 10 deep breaths per day. A total of 11 people participated in the study. Various behavioral science principles were used in the messages, including liking, reciprocity, commitment, social proof and goal setting. The results found that 7 of the participants completed 10 breaths on most days. While some were creative in "finding smiles", the study was unsure if the :) emoji directly led to more breaths. Overall, testimonials from participants seemed to indicate the practice brought feelings of calmness and gratitude.

A study examined the effects of a fruit and vegetable intervention on 20 participants' diets and purchasing habits pre-intervention. Post-intervention surveys of 18 participants found that while the intervention helped some think more about eating fruits and vegetables, most reported it did not lead to changes in their diets or purchasing a juice maker, and the communication approach was not the most effective.
