Ber jal is a large rectangular seine net used widely in Bangladesh and neighboring countries to catch large fish species like rohu, catla, chital, and boal. It requires many people to operate - one end is held on the bank while the other is spread in a semi-circle in the water, then the two ends are closed together. The net is made of synthetic twine and rope, with bamboo sticks along the top and bottom and floats and sinkers attached. Students were able to make a replica ber jal net using mosquito netting, styrofoam floats, rope, and bamboo plates to demonstrate how it works and potentially help with future fish harvesting.
