Benito Mussolini rose to power in Italy in 1922 as the youngest prime minister in Italian history. He did so by playing on public fears during a time of unemployment, inflation, and threats of communism. Mussolini styled himself as a dictator in 1925 and sought to make Italy powerful through empire building and restoring social order, though he proved a poor military leader and was removed from power in 1943 after losing numerous battles.
