June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Sandra:Can you do a few print screen shots with our screen? We have the Benchmark Common Core, which isn’t shown here. In My Library, teachers have access to all of the E-Books, Interactive Whiteboard Resources, Assessments and related teacher resources they are using in the classroom.
Check to make sure have searches that work. There are many ways to find materials on the NEW Benchmark Universe. I am looking for e-books that I can read in Small-Group reading for my Level H/13, 14 readers. My results display 55 books that match my selections. I can narrow this down further by also selecting the Content Area, Social Studies. Now I have 17 books that match my selections. To reset My Library, I simply click “reset”.I can also use specific fields for Benchmark Literacy to sort my Library by Grade, Unit and Week of instruction. We will come back to this in a little while when we create our small group reading groups and assign books to students.Trainer Action: Expand the Benchmark Literacy search area and click over BL Grade, Unit and Week to show the options available.
The View icon (blue circle) opens to details about each title. The Title Details will tell you important information, such as content area, reading levels and will also give a brief description about the book. You can also read book reviews that students have shared. Teachers can assign a book directly from here, but we will learn more about assignments shortly. If you press “Read” it will open to the book. If you press “Review & Share” you can complete the information. If you click on the actual book title, it will open the book immediately. Titles that have multiple levels are reader’s theater texts.
Students collaborate with their peers by sharing reviews of books they have read. You can write reviews as models for your students directly from your account. This is especially helpful at the beginning of the year or when you are first establishing the routines you’d like your students to follow. When you write a review, you can rate the book from 1 to 5 stars and add a short note about it.
The NEW Benchmark Universe puts every piece of instruction right at teachers’ fingertips. For each title, related teacher resources such as the Teacher’s Guide and Comprehension Card is accessible. The Teacher’s Guide, downloadable as a PDF, provides teachers with a lesson guide for each title. Comprehension Cards, available for every book, provide teacher prompts to save preparation time and help students respond to 4 levels of text-dependent questions aligned to Common Core and state assessments. In My Library Product Type: They don’t have the assessments loaded yet. These resources are easy to navigate to locate PDFs of all toolkit resources, instructional mini-lessonsfor whole group, black line masters, reproducibles, teachers guides, comprehension cards, oral reading records and more. All resources are organized according to the print program organization. For example, in Benchmark Literacy, you can find your resources by Grade, Unit and Week of instruction.Trainer Action: (Be sure to hit Reset if you are coming from the previous screen and have made selections.) On NEW Benchmark Universe, you can plan and customize lessons. To support planning, you can create Bookshelves and pre-populate them with materials and lessons, like customized playlists to use in class. Benchmark Literacy Example Lesson: To do this, create a new Bookshelf and name it Unit6 Wk1 Day3. In this lesson of Benchmark Literacy, we are teaching the Comprehension Strategy, “Summarize”. In this lesson, I need to use Comprehension Anchor Poster #3. Let’s add that poster to our bookshelf.Trainer Action: In advance of your presentation, create the bookshelf. Click the bookshelf name from the drop-down menu to open it. Now that you have built a virtual “bookshelf” on your “wall”, you need to add materials to it.There are many ways to search your library on the NEW Benchmark Universe. First, if you know the title of the book you are looking for, simply type the name of the book in the Search box. You may also type in partial titles and key words or use the Search Criteria.Trainer Action: Search for Talking E-Books. Select those that match the instructional purpose. Use the box in front of the title link. Next, click Add to Bookshelf. Trainer Note: Be sure to explain to participants that they need to save a book to a bookshelf or student assignment (which you will show shortly) in order for customizations to save. This applies to Talking E-Books and IWBs.
Your Turn! E-Books Test Drive ActivitiesYou have already modeledfor your participants the variety of ways to search for a ebooks. Direct your participants to search for a title and click on the link to launch the E-Book. Provide time for them to complete the handout for Test Drive Activities: Talking E-Books. They will be able to experience all the key features of the Talking E-Books. During this time, circulate around the computer lab or training room to troubleshoot any difficulties that arise in launching the Talking E-Books or working with the features. Debrief with participants as a whole group and answer any questions they may have.
The fastest way to search for a poster is to type “comprehension poster” in the search box. Immediately, I see them in my library results. Choose the appropriate grade and add them to the bookshelf. Remember, the bookshelves you have created are accessed through the drop-down menu.
Creating Customized Interactive Whiteboard Lessons in BookshelvesNow that my comprehension posters are in my bookshelf, let’s see how we can plan ahead and prepare a lesson. Click the poster to open it. I have already customized this poster for our lesson. In my Teaching Tips, I can see the instruction for this lesson. I have used the Notes feature to add Common Core Standards I am addressing; this is a space where I can include the any information about the lesson. These notes print out like the Notes View in Powerpoint. In my Whole Group lesson, I can use the Play button to hear the passage read aloud. I have used the Window Shade feature to hide words so students are prompted to say key words as the passage is read aloud, based on their comprehension during a second or third read of the text. As it is read aloud, I will reveal the hidden words. Students can come to the whiteboard and share their Big Ideas and Summaries. You can build your own interactive activities with games such as Hangman and Quiz Show. Students can create these activities as well – not only addressing content, but also 21st Century Skills.Trainer Action: Prior to the presentation, customize a poster, for example: Grade 1, Unit 6, Week 1, Day 3 poster “Water”. Add the annotations noted above. As you present, show each feature. Click Teaching Tips to show the instruction. Add Window Shades in the passage over the words “play”, “drink”, “hands”, “cook”, and “garden”. As the passage is read, reveal the hidden words. Add the Big Idea and Summary samples that are in the TRS (pg. 8). Show the add screen feature in blue preview pane, click on the “+” sign to open the menu. Show adding a YouTube screen, search a YouTube and insert.
Your Turn! Interactive Whiteboard Resources Test Drive ActivitiesProvide time for participants to complete the User Test Drive Activities, for Interactive Whiteboard Resources. This will give them a chance to explore the features and save a customized lesson. Debrief with the whole group and answer any questions they may have.
It’s easy to create and manage student groups. When you login to the site for the first time, your classes will have already been created by the tech admin at the district or school. Let’s go Manage Students. When I select the Class dropdown, I will see class rosters for classes that are assigned to me. I can select a class and view all of the students in my class. If I click the “i” icon next the student’s name, I will see his or her profile along with any demographics and special populations, assigned at the district level. I can also see the student’s username in this profile. In case a student has forgotten his or her username, this is where I can find it.Trainer Note: Click Manage Students. Click the Select a Class dropdown and select a class. Click the “i” icon next to a student’s name to open their profile.Teachers who have purchased a Classroom Subscription to the Benchmark Universe will have the Add Student and Delete Student options available to them so they may add and delete students directly from their interface.
Now let’s create a group. I’m going to name this group my Yellow Birds and add all Early Level students to this group. I can continue to do this to set up all of my leveled guided reading groups for my class. I can use these groups when making assignments of e-books and assessments and when viewing reports of student progress.Trainer Note: Click Create Group. Name the group Yellow Birds. From the list of students, select 5 students and click Add to This Group.

With the NEW Benchmark Universe, you can differentiate instruction by using all of the categories in their library to find texts that meet student needs and for practice applying metacognitive and text-dependent strategies.Trainer Action: Click Assignments to go to that screen.
Since I created my Unit 6, Week 1, Day 3 whole group lesson earlier, I am now going to assign the e-books to my students for small-group and independent reading. For Grade 1, Unit 6, there are 6 leveled texts recommended. First, let’s name the assignment and add a start and end date. Students won’t see the assignment until the start date. I can also add any special instructions that I want my students to see when they begin the assignment.Trainer Action: Click the “+” icon and name the assignment “Unit 6 Reading”. Select a start date of today and a due date of 3 weeks from today. Add special instructions.
Now I am going to add e-books to my assignment. I am taken back to My Library. I will use the Benchmark Literacy search to find leveled texts for Grade 6, Unit 6. Now I can easily add them to the assignment.Trainer Action: Click Assign Materials. In My Library, expand the Benchmark Literacy search. Select Leveled Reading, Grade 1, Unit 6. Select the books for levels F through I and click Add to Assignment.

When my students open the books in their assignment, they will see all of my pre-created annotations.Trainer Note: Click the Customize button to open a book. Add a few notes and bookmarks in the book; demonstrate the navigational tools, as well as highlighter, pen, and zoom tools. Close the book to return to the Teacher Dashboard.

Instructional Planning—Integrating Technology into InstructionTake a few minutes to reflect on what has been covered in the training to this point. Your participants have experienced the Teacher and Student walls, and have had the chance to create bookshelves, make assignments and complete the Test Drive Activities. Now, it is important for participants to consider how they will incorporate bookshelves, a new and important learning management feature, as well as Interactive Whiteboards and Talking Ebooks into their lessons and to extend the classroom, expand student learning. Provide time for your group to have instructional planning to create activities and to incorporate them into their literacy plan. Have participants work in pairs, by grade level teams or another grouping that you think will be effective. Ask participants to consider how the resources will support students as they acquire and build: vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension skills and strategies. To help them focus and process, ask them to consider the type of activity (Whole Group, Partner or Independent Work) and when they would incorporate this activity into their Literacy Block (Shared Reading, Workstation, Independent) or as Home-School Connection (homework). Challenge your participants to use as many of the functionalities and features as they can! Trainer Note: Participants can use their Teacher’s Resource System and /or Teacher’s Guide for this activity to assist with their instructional planning. They can review activities for Before, During and After reading lessons for further ideas. They will want to connect the Talking E-Book Activities they create to this instruction.
