This document discusses how dental implants can improve denture retention and provides three case studies as examples. Dental implants are inserted into the patient's mouth and used to support and retain dentures. A variety of retention mechanisms are available. The first case describes a patient who received an upper and lower denture supported by two implants each. The second case involved a patient whose upper denture lacked stability, so they received six implants in the upper jaw. The third case combined a removable upper denture supported by four implants and fixed crowns in the lower jaw replacing posterior teeth.
1. The document discusses criteria for selecting posterior teeth for dentures, including factors like the condition of the patient's ridges, neuromuscular control, previous dentures, and arch discrepancies.
2. It describes the advantages and disadvantages of different occlusal schemes like monoplane, anatomic, lingualized, and semi-anatomic, noting that monoplane is best for patients with poor ridges or bruxism while lingualized can provide esthetics and balance.
3. The key factors in selecting a posterior tooth design are the patient's physical condition, neuromuscular control, existing dentition and occlusion, and ridge relationships.

Larry was unhappy with his smile due to missing and worn teeth. He wanted a permanent solution that would restore his smile and allow him to chew and get a job. He underwent the All-On-Four procedure where all teeth were removed and implants placed, allowing for a temporary fixed bridge to be placed immediately. After three months of integration, permanent porcelain bridges were made and secured to the implants, fully restoring his smile.

Clear aligners are an alternative to traditional braces for correcting teeth positioning. They are made of clear plastic and are fabricated to fit each individual's mouth. Aligners are worn for 20 hours a day and changed every 3 weeks as the teeth move incrementally into the desired position. Treatment time with aligners can be as short as 3 months or up to 6 months. Aligners offer advantages over traditional braces such as being removable, easier to clean, more comfortable, and less likely to irritate gums.
This chapter discusses three different tooth identification systems: the Universal Tooth Identification System (UTIS), Palmer's Notation system, and the FDI/ISO system. UTIS numbers teeth 1-32 from the maxillary right third molar to the mandibular left third molar. Palmer's Notation designates teeth based on their quadrant using numbers or letters. The FDI/ISO system assigns each quadrant a number and uses a two-digit code to identify individual teeth.

This chapter discusses dental anatomy and nomenclature. It describes the two dental arches, the primary and permanent dentitions, and the different types of teeth. The primary dentition has 20 teeth that are eventually replaced by the 32 teeth of the permanent dentition. The chapter also outlines the functions of incisors, canines, premolars, and molars and introduces the Universal Numbering System for identifying individual teeth.
Divisions, surfaces and tissues of the tooth; surrounding structuresHeatherSeghi
The document discusses the anatomy of teeth and surrounding structures. It describes how teeth are divided into crowns, necks, and roots. It outlines the five surfaces of each tooth and related terms. It details the four major tissues that make up teeth - enamel, dentin, cementum, and pulp. It also explains the periodontium, which includes structures that surround and support teeth like the periodontal ligament, alveolar bone, and gingiva. The goal is to identify and understand the divisions, surfaces, tissues, and surrounding structures of teeth.
This document discusses the use of implants to supplement removable partial dentures (RPDs) in various clinical situations. Implants can be used to improve support, stability, and retention of RPDs when existing dentition is compromised. Common scenarios include using implants in extension base RPDs, with questionable implant anchorage or unfavorable configurations, to replace lost implants in key locations, replace a lost natural tooth abutment, or supplement insufficient existing dentition. Resilient attachments are often used to retain implant-assisted RPDs while avoiding implant overload. Complications can include peri-implantitis, loose abutments, and wear of attachments. Overlay RPDs are also discussed as an option to

Retention is an important phase of orthodontic treatment aimed at maintaining teeth in their corrected positions after appliances are removed. Without retention, teeth have a tendency to relapse back to their original positions. Various types of retainers can be used for retention, including removable retainers, fixed retainers, and clear aligners. Certain types of orthodontic tooth movements, such as expansion, require longer-term retention to prevent relapse. Proper retention protocols help ensure teeth remain stable long-term.

This document discusses dental implants and overdentures. It defines overdentures as replacement teeth retained by dental implants that were developed to help edentulous patients regain quality of life. There are three main types of overdentures - implant-retained gum supported, bar-retained implant supported, and fixed implant supported. Overdentures have benefits like promoting better digestion by allowing more thorough chewing, preventing bone resorption by stimulating the jaw, and providing a more secure and stable fit compared to adhesive-retained dentures.
The document discusses methods for accurately placing orthodontic brackets on teeth. It describes potential errors in bracket placement including horizontal, axial, thickness, and vertical errors. It then discusses challenges in locating the center of clinical crowns for partially erupted teeth, teeth with gingival inflammation, teeth with displaced roots, or teeth with fractures or wear. The document proposes using a bracket placement chart to supplement direct visualization when placing brackets. The chart involves measuring crown heights, recording the values, selecting the closest row, and confirming bracket heights match the chart.
This document provides an overview of implant supported overdentures. It defines overdentures and discusses the advantages and disadvantages compared to fixed prostheses. It describes different prosthetic options and classifications of prosthesis movement. Treatment options for mandibular and maxillary overdentures using various numbers and positions of implants are outlined. The focus is on removable prostheses that are partially retained by and supported by dental implants.
This document discusses overlay partial dentures and the use of implants to support them. It describes how overlay partial dentures can maintain tooth support and bone, while improving esthetics. Examples are provided of overlay denture designs from the 1930s-1990s, highlighting lessons learned about protecting abutment teeth. The use of implants to supplement existing dentition or replace key abutments is discussed, along with a case example of an implant-assisted overlay partial denture. Unanticipated implant failures are also summarized.

Partial veener crowns /certified fixed orthodontic courses by Indian dental a...Indian dental academy
The document discusses partial veneer crowns, specifically three-quarter crowns. It provides historical context on partial veneer crowns dating back to ancient times. It then covers terminology, advantages and disadvantages, indications and contraindications, treatment planning considerations, and preparation techniques for maxillary posterior three-quarter crowns. Proper preparation is important to provide adequate retention and resistance while minimizing removal of sound tooth structure.
A positive dental treatment outcome depends on establishing a positive relationship between the doctor and patient. Fractured or discolored teeth can be effectively restored with crowns that can be contoured and stained to be virtually undetectable in the patient's mouth. Several case studies demonstrate patients with fractured, worn, short, or discolored teeth whose conditions were improved through procedures involving crowns.
Dental Esthetics include the use of bonded ceramic veneers and laminates. This presentation helps to understand various concepts relating to the preparation and utility of such restorations. - Dr. Abhishek John Samuel, MDS (Endodontics)

A single complete denture is a complete denture that occludes against some or all of the natural teeth, a fixed restoration, or a previously constructed removable partial denture or a complete denture.
Opposing natural teeth that are sufficient in number and do not necessitate a fixed or removable partial denture.
Opposing a partially edentulous arch in which the missing teeth have been or will be replaced by a fixed partial denture.
Opposing arch with an existing complete denture.
This document discusses treatment options for fully edentulous patients using dental implants, including immediate load full-arch implant solutions. It covers patient evaluation, treatment planning, surgical techniques for immediate loading, and presents clinical cases demonstrating treatment decisions. Complications that can occur are also reviewed, as well as maintenance considerations like oral hygiene techniques. The document emphasizes that implant-supported prostheses can provide patients with improved function and quality of life compared to removable dentures.
A positive dental treatment outcome depends on building a positive relationship between the dentist and patient. The document describes nine cases where patients presented with issues like missing, decayed, discolored, or irregular teeth. The dentist was able to successfully restore the patients' smiles through comprehensive treatments like crowns, bridges, veneers, dental implants, and gum surgery. This allowed the patients' teeth to be rebuilt or gaps to be closed to improve their confidence and bite.
This document discusses the adjunctive role of orthodontic therapy for adult periodontal patients. It outlines several benefits such as improving access for cleaning crowded teeth, helping correct osseous defects, and improving esthetics before restorative work. It describes how orthodontics can treat various periodontal problems like hemiseptal defects, advanced bone loss, furcation defects, and gingival discrepancies. Precautions are discussed like controlling periodontal inflammation first and using bone level instead of crown anatomy to guide bracket placement for patients with significant bone loss.

Sectional dentures for microstomia patients.pptxSatvikaPrasad
Microstomia, characterized by an abnormally small oral aperture, presents significant challenges in prosthodontic treatment, including limited access for examination, difficulties in impression making, and challenges with prosthesis insertion and removal. To manage these issues, customized impression techniques using sectional trays and elastomeric materials are employed. Prostheses may be designed in segments or with flexible materials to facilitate handling. Minimally invasive procedures and the use of digital technologies can enhance patient comfort. Education and training for patients on prosthesis care and maintenance are crucial for compliance. Regular follow-up and a multidisciplinary approach, involving collaboration with other specialists, ensure comprehensive care and improved quality of life for microstomia patients.
