Total to date in Five grant rounds $ 416,328.00 Informing this opportunity is the issue of cultural and civic belonging –how to understand and accommodate cultural difference in matters of civic participation, how to build a tolerance of diverse views: religious, cultural, aesthetic, and how to enhance the understanding of the common good.
- Art event or presentation: for example, a series of performances addressing issues of women crossing the US/Mexico border illegally in the Sonoran Desert is an opportunity to partner with social justice, civic and community organizations to create the space for dialogue with illegal immigrant women. Public performances are as a catalyst for dialogue about immigration, and actions the community can take. CULTURAL COMPETENCIES W/PARTNERSHIP
- Art as an invitation to participate: for example, a large scale dia de los muertos inspired non motorized public procession provides a substantial forum for the expression of grief held in annually in Tucson Arizona. BELONGING
- Art as space for engagement: for example, an artist’s residency at a social service agency or library that creates a safe environment for new immigrants to express their concerns about their political rights as they relate to civil society. The art created is exhibited and used as a space for public discourse, the Finding Voice Project.
- From PLACE Survey: One example of a significant impact or change the project had on participants/or audiences. “ The value of arts education, story telling and intentional place making is not only understood, but highly valued with the 4R’s coalition. The project partners have adopted many of our tools, techniques and practices”
- Worker Transit Authority: present events that incorporate performance, graphics, and data in a participatory manner designed to facilitate discussion about the issues of land use, infrastructure, transportation and the environment.
