As time and technology progress, growing businesses demand the need to bring in revolutionary technologies to cope with the growing competition. Especially in the field of healthcare, the urgency of growth escalates to higher levels.
I created this presentation for a client who wanted to understand how blockchain technology can be used in healthcare, particularly for eHR (electronic health record). They wanted a non-technical overview.
The use cases for blockchain in healthcare will start in small projects that reduce duplicative work but can eventually shift to a system where patients control access rights to their data.

A block in a blockchain refers to a collection of data. A blockchain is immutable as it is impossible to change data once it is added to the blockchain. The blocks are linked to form a chain and this is what makes a blockchain so trustworthy. It is this decentralized nature of blockchain, which makes doctors, patients, and healthcare providers to gain access to the same information quickly and safely.
This provides a deep intro to the blockchain technology, and explores several use-cases within healthcare where it could lead to disruption and add value

Trusted and open R&D processes, auditable & secure transactions between parties, authenticated by mass collaboration and powered by collective self-interest, rather than by fewer and fewer pharmaceutical giants motivated by profit alone. This healthcare ecosystem is immune to exorbitant drug prices, tampering, fraud, or political control. There is much talk of how Blockchain will revolutionize healthcare. This hype must be tempered by the fact that healthcare already has a trust factor built-in, or patients would not take pills prescribed by doctors, or let providers stick needles in their bodies. It is often said that “Riches are in Niches,” and this is the case for blockchain and areas that are tangential to the direct care of the patient. As referenced in the 2015 ONC Interoperability Roadmap, Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) will need to be connected to the patients’ health status. Physicians currently monitor carboxyhemoglobin as an indicator of a patient’s level of smoking. As part of a smoking cessation program, a smart contract on the clinical Blockchain could identify normal blood carboxyhemoglobin (COhb) as reported by a clinical reference lab from the Laboratory Analyzer Blockchain and execute a request to increase an incentive benefit controlled by a “private / permissioned” USDA Clinical Blockchain. The clinical Blockchain will track the specific “chain of custody” from iStat Analyzer (Accriva, Radiometer, etc…) to the patient test results report, which triggers the smart contract with the USDA to distribute an incentive. Both the physician and the patient are notified of the disbursement. Similar use cases could be implemented for patients with diabetes, and obesity, helping people live healthy lives.
Blockchain in Healthcare – Industry Adoption Analysis Netscribes
In the face of rising medical costs, data breaches, claims-related frauds, and counterfeit drugs, a number of organizations are betting on blockchain to bring greater transparency and cost-effectiveness to the healthcare industry. Blockchain startups, technology leaders as well as healthcare solution providers have joined forces to address age-old challenges and are creating new business models in the process. While governmental stance on the use of blockchain-enabled healthcare solutions is largely unclear in most countries, policies on health insurance, medicaid expansion, health information exchange (HIE), among others, have been favorable in this direction.
At present, a majority of market players are focused on developing blockchain solutions in segments like medical and health records, supply chain management, clinical trials, and billing and claims management. As tech companies continue to innovate healthcare-specific blockchain solutions, the industry is expected to witness significant development of decentralized patient records as a platform (dApp), which will offer ease of access and universal identities to patients.
This report takes a closer look at the uses cases, startups, pilot projects, and innovation trends to understand where the industry lies in the blockchain adoption life cycle and what changes to expect by 2028-30.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
