A block in a blockchain refers to a collection of data. A blockchain is immutable as it is impossible to change data once it is added to the blockchain. The blocks are linked to form a chain and this is what makes a blockchain so trustworthy. It is this decentralized nature of blockchain, which makes doctors, patients, and healthcare providers to gain access to the same information quickly and safely.
Blockchain has the potential to transform healthcare industry by improving the safety and privacy associated with data transmission. This also promotes patient centricity where patients have the control over and could manage their data. Blockchain technology creates unique opportunities to reduce complexities and costs associated with data transmission, enable trustless collaboration between stakeholders, and provide secure and private platform for data transmission.
Blockchain technology provides benefits to the healthcare industry by creating secure, immutable patient records that multiple parties can access. It reduces insurance fraud by making records unalterable and prevents pharmaceutical theft by allowing drugs to be traced throughout the supply chain. Implementing blockchain can also facilitate data exchanges in clinical trials and positively impact a country's economy by transforming healthcare information exchanges.

There is much talk of how Blockchain will revolutionize healthcare. This hype must be tempered by the fact that healthcare already has a trust factor built-in, or patients would not take pills prescribed by doctors, or let providers stick needles in their bodies. It is often said that “Riches are in Niches,” and this is the case for blockchain and areas that are tangential to the direct care of the patient. As referenced in the 2015 ONC Interoperability Roadmap, Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) will need to be connected to the patients’ health status. Physicians currently monitor carboxyhemoglobin as an indicator of a patient’s level of smoking. As part of a smoking cessation program, a smart contract on the clinical Blockchain could identify normal blood carboxyhemoglobin (COhb) as reported by a clinical reference lab from the Laboratory Analyzer Blockchain and execute a request to increase an incentive benefit controlled by a “private / permissioned” USDA Clinical Blockchain. The clinical Blockchain will track the specific “chain of custody” from iStat Analyzer (Accriva, Radiometer, etc…) to the patient test results report, which triggers the smart contract with the USDA to distribute an incentive. Both the physician and the patient are notified of the disbursement. Similar use cases could be implemented for patients with diabetes, and obesity, helping people live healthy lives.

11 ways blockchain can improve the healthcare industry
1. 11 Ways Blockchain Can Improve the
Healthcare Industry
The world’s health care system is facing many challenges which are
considered very common. From the data sharing processes and the
uncertainty about the clinical experiments and medical researches to the
field of complex billing and less optimal patient care, healthcare
shareholders are under increased pressure to control costs as well as to
continue high-quality care to the patients.
Today we are here to look at the features of blockchain development
services which will help improve the healthcare industry. The power of the
blockchain technology provides you with safe and secure access to the full
history of the patient records related to medical as well as personal.

2. The following are the various ways to use blockchain in the healthcare
industry.
1. Medical Data Sharing and Management
Most of the health care institutions fail to manage the lifetime records of
patients and there is no system that can connect the data of multiple
institutions in a way to make a chain of connected data.
Blockchains securely ease the transfer of records of the patients. The system
allows the medical institutions to record the data of patients locally as well
as across the borders. This will help the organizations to boost coordination
between the members of health management, support medical teams and
also lower the transaction cost.
Medical data sharing and management facility will help you keep your
information updated and according to the timeline.
2. Drug Development and Supply Chain
Drug development is very necessary these days to keep the medications
updated. Also, it is very important for healthcare organizations to manage
their supply chains like pharmacies and other health care institutions.
In a GoodFirms survey, 89.3% of the blockchain developers hinted at a
technological disruption in the supply chain industry due to Blockchain.
Blockchain provides accurate results when it comes to drug development
reports. It also helps healthcare institutions track the various supply chains
connected with them.

3. 3. Patient Access
In a blockchain, the patient can access as well as manage the data belongs to
him in various medical records. The various records of the patients are
traceable with the records being stored in the blockchain. This will also help
them to reduce the risk of information deletion, false medication claims, and
missing vaccinations.
4. Smart Contacts
In this world, smart contacts are the only way to stay in the competition.
Blockchain helps the owners and other persons to develop smart contacts in
order to reduce inefficiencies and also allow swift payment methods which
help healthcare institutions to generate bills automatically.
5. Frauds
In today’s world, healthcare faces many problems like cybersecurity and
frauds. Many times because of the lack of interaction between the hospitals,
service providers and patients, these kinds of things frequently happen.
With the development of transparent hyper ledgers with the use of
blockchain, you can continuously track the payments and the medical
documentation. By making use of this, you will make your transactions safe
and secure.
6. Paperwork
It is very difficult for healthcare organizations to keep a record of all the
patients in physical paper. As there are thousands of patients on an
everyday basis, it becomes difficult for them to track every patient with the

4. help of paperwork. Blockchain technology provides the institution with the
facility to make paper-based records less and record the information
digitally. This will help the patients to have additional copies of the
transcripts of the medical services and other different documents.
7. Error-free Systems
With the help of blockchain block records, you can easily make an error-free
system. In the manual system, humans can record the information wrong or
duplicate records may exist in the different or same file. This activity just
increases the processing cost, nothing else. Blockchain will provide you with
a system by which you can index the patient’s information without error and
duplicity.
8. Make Data Interoperability
In the information exchange process, you need to share various types of
data with the other doctors, nurses and other stakeholders. The blockchain
lets you store information on the cloud-based environment to enhance data
interoperability between various departments of the healthcare institutions.
9. Authentication
With the help of blockchain, only the authorized person will be able to
access the various types of information according to their roles. You cannot
do the same thing with the help of a manual system, i.e. the current system
of the healthcare institutions. Blockchain allows the admin to grant various
roles to various persons according to their designation so they can’t access
irrelevant information.

5. 10. Easy Payments
Blockchain makes monetary transactions very easy. Patients, as well as
healthcare institutions, can make and receive payments with the help of
blockchain. This is the safest method to keep track of the payments of a
healthcare institution. Also, blockchain keeps them safe from various
hacker's attacks while transferring money.
11. Insurance Coverage and Claims
Sometimes due to the inaccurate reports of the healthcare institutions, it
leads the patients in the wrong direction with respect to insurance claims.
But with the reports generated through a blockchain, there will be no
chance of errors in the final reports of the patients and patients will also
tally their reports with the system to ensure accuracy.
Conclusion
The potential of blockchain development in the healthcare industry is
dependent upon the acceptance of the healthcare industry as well as the
features they implement. Many of the organizations recently adopted
blockchain, but they are not using the complete system to get all of its
benefits. They are afraid to implement the system because they lack
knowledge and expertise. But they must understand that the blockchain is a
system, which can take their healthcare institution to the next level.
There are so many different ways to obtain the benefits of this technology.
We stated the list of common ways and benefits to adopting blockchain in
the organization. The technology has much potential that it can disrupt the
entire healthcare landscape as we know it.
