9. Briefly – Five-Point Science of Hair Each hair on the body grows from follicle At the base of each follicle is a cluster of cells that reproduce to make new hair cells. The new cells produced are added to the root of the hair, causing it to grow longer. Nonliving fiber made from a protein called keratin. Keratin is made up of long chains of amino acids created from what are known as the ‘COHNS’ elements: carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen and sulfur. These chains are linked together end to end like beads, and are also cross-linked together by side bonds responsible for the strength and elasticity of the hair strand. Composed primarily of proteins (70% is keratin). Made up of three parts: the cuticle, the cortex and the medulla . The medulla is the innermost layer of the hair; however, not everyone's hair has a medulla, and it is most commonly found only in thick, coarse hair. Considered unimportant when it comes to the protection of hair The medulla is an actual mystery of hair - we don't know why it exists !

10. The cuticle is the outer layer of hair, made up of individual scales that lay against one another like roof tiles. The cuticle of a healthy hair strand will lie flat and protect the inside of the hair shaft against damage, as well as keep moisture inside your strands. Keeping the cuticle of the hair strand closed is one of the most important things to do to keep hair moisturized, frizz-free, and healthy overall. The cortex is the middle layer of the hair shaft the natural color of your hair is determined within the cortex by the pigment melanin. The permanent chemical changes that take place in your hair due to permanent hair color, texturizing, perming, straightening or relaxing take place within the cortex. Made up of long proteins that twist like the curly cord on a telephone. Five-Points Cont’d When you get split ends, you're seeing the cortex at its worst. You've worn away the protective cuticle on the tips of your hairs with harsh treatment like hard brushing or too much sun and water. Though most people suffer from dry hair (too little moisture), you can have too much water in your strands. Without the cuticle, the fibers of the cortex fray like the strands of a rope. Anything below 7 on the scale is considered acidic and anything above 7 is considered alkaline. 15. Scalp Issues Note that you can also simply have product buildup. How to check: Take the edge of a comb or your fingernails and glide down a strand of hair with them. If you have a powdery white substance on your nails or comb when you are done, it’s probably product buildup. This occurs when shampoos or conditioners either don’t remove styling products, or when the fillers in the shampoos and conditioners themselves leave a buildup. Dry skin generally results from the same issues as dry scalp. Dandruff vs. Dry Scalp Dandruff Mixture of sebum (oil which comes from the hair shaft), sweat, bacteria and scalp tissue. Causes: overactive sebaceous glands, bad hygiene, hair grease, scratching/digging into scalp, sharing combs Usually appears in large areas of the scalp at a time, and is distinctly different than dry scalp if you view them side by side. It is always yellow or orange colored because of the sebum and sweat. Dry scalp Over shedding of dead and dehydrated skin cells of the scalp caused by itching, scratching, over combing, and due to severe dehydration of the sebaceous glands. There is also not a bacteria present in most cases, and the skin has not combined with sweat and sebum. Dry scalp takes less care to battle, and is usually attributed to bad products being used. Shedding will be white in color. In in fact, the white colored flakes you may see in dandruff shampoo commercials is actually dry scalp not dandruff.

16. Texture Measured by the degree of fineness or coarseness of hair Varies according to the diameter of each individual hair. Four major types of hair texture: Fine, Medium, Coarse and Wiry. Within the four texture ranges hair can also be: thin, medium or thick density and it can be straight, curly, wavy or kinky.
