Conflict is part of ALL relationships. Sometimes we confuse “normal’ conflict within friendships with
bullying behaviors. While conflict between friends can have hurtful consequences, its usually accidental
and the person who caused the harm feels remorseful (they feel sorry their actions). This is different
from bullying situations that involve intentional harm.
While conflicts within healthy relationships happen occasionally, they lack the sense of intimidation
that’s part of bullying behaviors that happen repeatedly (or that we believe could happen again).
Healthy relationships involve shared power (not the “power over” of bullying situations), and those
involved can choose to disengage from the friendship without fear of being targeted.
We learn our beliefs from many sources-especially our families-but some people who study kids says
that peers are especially important for kids your age. Many people think that messages in the media-
such as TV shows, music, and social media-can affect our beliefs. Many young people and adults
strongly believe that everyone deserves respect and that people shouldn’t harm others. But many of
these same people fail to do anything when they see people getting hurt-and they may even think that
the person being targeted deserves it. Why do you think this happens? Is it ever okay to blame a
victim? NO, it’s NEVER okay to blame victims for the harm that others inflict on them.
People should be treated with
respect.
