The recent popularity of sharing economy businesses demonstrates the innovation in exercising different strategies in property rights can lead to further increase the efficiency in the market. Open Source Business Models are similar to the sharing economy in the area of copyright. I am going to briefly introduce the different licences including Free and Open Source Licences and Creative Commons Licences. Examples of interesting business models built around these licences will then be presented.

Software Heritage: Archiving the Free Software Commons for Fun & ProfitSpeck&Tech
ABSTRACT: The ambition of the Software Heritage project is to collect, preserve, and share the entire body of free software that is published on the Internet in source code form, together with its development history. Since its public announcement in 2016, the project has assembled the largest collection of freely available software source code for about 5 billion unique source code files and 1 billion commits, coming from more than 80 million projects.
Initially focused on the collection and preservation goals - which were at the time urgent, due to the recurrent disappearances of development forges - Software Heritage has since rolled out several mechanisms to peruse its archive, making progress on the sharing goal.
In this talk, we will review the status of the Software Heritage project, emphasizing how users and developers can, today, benefit from the availability of a great public library of source code.

ABSTRACT: Open source started as a marketing program for free software back in 1998. Starting as a controversial and disruptive idea, it has moved through the stages of acceptance to become the dominant idea in creating software systems. Why did it start and what was the timeline? Why did open source work so well? What's next?

There are hundreds of open source licenses. Most developers don't take the time to read or understand them, but can you continue to ignore them? We have seen a rise in litigation around open source license over the last 10 years. And, in the last 12 months we have seen the first examples of OSS copyright trolls that are taking developers to court in an attempt to monetize GPL violations.
This presentation covers: How OSS licenses are enforced;
What are the main types of OSS licenses; How to identify them;
and what steps you need to take to ensure you are complying.
We cover use case scenarios and do a "deep dive" on the most used licenses today and how to understand them

This presentation is an introduction to Free and Open Source Software Licensing and Business Models. An open-source license is a type of license for computer software and other products that allows the source code, blueprint or design to be used, modified and/or shared under defined terms and conditions. This allows end users to review and modify the source code, blueprint or design for their own customization, curiosity or troubleshooting needs.
GitHub is a web-based repository for software projects that uses Git as a repository. GitHub is reportedly the world’s largest open source community, hosting over 35 million repositories that include both code and the documentation for that code. In addition to the public version of GitHub, companies can adopt GitHub Enterprise internal use, so it is gaining popularity for private repositories as well.
Docs aren’t siloed in GitHub — they live with the code, follow the same workflow as the code, and are reviewed with the code, which is especially useful in an Agile environment, where docs are part of the “definition of done.”
GitHub includes version control, issue tracking, notifications, diffs, status dashboards, documentation, and social features. All of these features are useful when developing and managing documentation in a GitHub project. Technical communicators have other opportunities to contribute in GitHub, including commenting on, reviewing, and merging proposed changes and managing the wiki community.
In this session, we’ll learn about these features, GitHub terminology, and about documentation workflows in GitHub.

OSSF 2018 - Colin Charles of GrokOpen - Community vs. enterprise how not to ...FINOS
The Developer (GrokOpen - Colin Charles)
Your popular OSS project gets corporate-backing & widespread community adoption. You create an enterprise supported version as it's easier to sell an "enterprise spin-off with support" that is better than the currently "stable" community edition. It flourishes as the money starts rolling in. Is one version better than the other? The community gets annoyed but you need resources to keep the releases coming and the code maintained. Just because it’s open source doesn’t mean it’s free. Forking happens. Rewind.
What works? What doesn’t work? How do you manage the split personality nature well to keep management as well as the community happy. Learn from other successful models as well as the many failed experiments.
This lecture looks at Open Source products as the shape of things to come. Open Source is completely changing the software industry and the same models are starting to be applied to hardware and creative works.
Simon Phipps, President, Open Source Initiative
Open source is not about free stuff. It's a way of granting permission in advance so that innovation can happen without obstruction and so loose-knit communities can collaborate freely. As such, it's more important than ever in an age of APIs, devices and distributed web infrastructure.
This session will:
Explain the dynamics of open source licensing
Consider the relative merits of licensing "strengths" for IoT
Discuss the challenges of software patents to APIs and open collaboration.
Data Con LA 2022-Open Source or Open Core in Your Data Layer? What Needs to B...Data Con LA
Anil Inamdar, VP & Head of Data Solutions, Instaclustr
Most organizations considering open source and open core cloud technologies as part of their all-important data stack understand they need to rigorously evaluate the software's licensing terms and gauge the long-term health of its community and ecosystem. What still happens less frequently ' but is just as crucial to these risk assessments ' is developing a thorough understanding of the business models governing the commercial organizations attached to each data-layer technology being considered. You must discern the underlying motivations of the vendors or technology providers you depend on to deliver or support open source data-layer software (as well as those vendors with strong influence over its development and maintenance). By acutely understanding these incentives, you can identify if, where, and how they may map to possible risks to your enterprise's adoption and ongoing open source implementation. Don't limit the assessment to licenses and community health -- although both are still very key variables.
This session will discuss specifics on what you need to look for and consider when vetting open source data technologies in the cloud as offered by:
-- Businesses using OSS as the foundation of their own intellectual property
-- Businesses that maintain total control offer the OSS they offer
-- Major cloud providers
This slide is prepared as a course work for E-Business Management undergraduate course at Yıldız Technical University, Industrial Engineering department.
When we presented this subject we talked about relation between business and open source. For instance, some corporations has changed their models being from product provider to service provider. So this means a change in financial approaches.
"Open source movement is strongly supported from open source software users and developers, according to their groups' agendas and discourses."
Business Models and Open Source Licenses in 2019: Can we all get along?Jeffrey Borek
The open source definition is over 20 years old. Cloudera and Hortonworks have completed their all-stock merger of their software companies. Major companies in the open source ecosystem are being snapped up by traditional IT companies. Seems like a good business model, yes? But Stephen would like to observe that despite these successes, there is NO open source business model.
Jeffrey would beg to differ! From data centers to the cloud, from self-driving cars to drones - open source software is everywhere. Major enterprise companies that are bottom-line driven are changing the way they participate in open source, starting to actively engage and contribute to open source projects - not just consume them as products. Having OS in your business model looks great, or does it?
Over the last year a major conflict has emerged between Cloud Platforms and VCs looking to make $$$ with open source.
Open source software is software that can be used for any purpose by anyone without the need to negotiate with the rights holders. Open standards on the other hand are standards created in a process accessible on the same terms by everyone, but potentially with Standard-Essential Patents (SEPs) associated and with fees to even read the standard. While the potential of both “Opens” is strong, in reality there is an underlying conflict between them that is growing in importance as the business of traditionally SEP-centric companies relies more and more on software. This talk will explain the issues, suggest ways to address the conflict and outline work OSI is doing on behalf of the open source community.

Creative Commons was found due to the failure to stop the Copyright Term Extension Act. This ever increasing control is imposed on us in the name of the benefits of the creators, with the latest incarnation as the Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market. By giving creators tools to receive revenue without retaining full copyright, we can demonstrate that open business models are viable alternatives other than control. The success of "Made with Creative Commons" strongly indicated that Open Business Models should be an integrated part of the Creative Commons Movement

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

Why React Native as a Strategic Advantage for Startup Innovation.pdfayushiqss
Do you know that React Native is being increasingly adopted by startups as well as big companies in the mobile app development industry? Big names like Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest have already integrated this robust open-source framework.
In fact, according to a report by Statista, the number of React Native developers has been steadily increasing over the years, reaching an estimated 1.9 million by the end of 2024. This means that the demand for this framework in the job market has been growing making it a valuable skill.
But what makes React Native so popular for mobile application development? It offers excellent cross-platform capabilities among other benefits. This way, with React Native, developers can write code once and run it on both iOS and Android devices thus saving time and resources leading to shorter development cycles hence faster time-to-market for your app.
Let’s take the example of a startup, which wanted to release their app on both iOS and Android at once. Through the use of React Native they managed to create an app and bring it into the market within a very short period. This helped them gain an advantage over their competitors because they had access to a large user base who were able to generate revenue quickly for them.
