Overall life span (LS) was 1671.7±1721.6 days and cumulative 5YS reached 62.4%, 10 years – 50.4%, 20 years – 44.6%. 94 LCP lived more than 5 years without cancer (LS=2958.6±1723.6 days), 22 – more than 10 years (LS=5571±1841.8 days). 67 LCP died because of LC (LS=471.9±344 days). AT significantly improved 5YS (68% vs. 53.7%) (P=0.028 by log-rank test). Cox modeling displayed that 5YS of LCP significantly depended on: N0-N12, T3-4, blood cell circuit, cell ratio factors (ratio between cancer cells-CC and blood cells subpopulations), LC cell dynamics, recalcification time, heparin tolerance, prothrombin index, protein, AT, procedure type (P=0.000-0.031). Neural networks, genetic algorithm selection and bootstrap simulation revealed relationships between 5YS and N0-12 (rank=1), thrombocytes/CC (rank=2), segmented neutrophils/CC (3), eosinophils/CC (4), erythrocytes/CC (5), healthy cells/CC (6), lymphocytes/CC (7), stick neutrophils/CC (8), leucocytes/CC (9), monocytes/CC (10). Correct prediction of 5YS was 100% by neural networks computing (error=0.000; area under ROC curve=1.0).

Fellowship Program
Flinders Medical Centre is an interventional hospital in Adelaide, South
Australia. It provides a cardiology service for diverse areas: from urban
Adelaide to rural South Australia and the Northern Territory. This leads
to a large caseload of both acute and elective cases (including primary
PCI, rotablation, IVUS, pressure wire assessment and chronic total
occlusions). Over 90% of cases are performed via the radial route. The
fellow can expect to complete in excess of 500 PCI cases.
Flinders Medical Centre has a well established TAVI and structural heart
disease programme (PFO/ASD closure/ Mitraclip) that the fellow will be
actively involved with.
Multiple interventional research opportunities are available. The
interventional fellow will be encouraged to develop a research project
leading to presentation and publication. Attendance at regional and
national meetings is encouraged.

Dr Sheraz Nazir during his fellowship post in
The BCIS interventional fellowship in Adelaide (South Australia) is undertaken at Flinders Medical Centre under the
supervision of Dr Julian Vaile and Professor Derek Chew. This provides the selected fellow from the UK with a unique
opportunity to enhance their skills in all aspects of Interventional Cardiology. There is a friendly and supportive
environment for the Fellow to develop their interventional technique, practice evidence-based decision making and
become confident as independent operators.
There are three interventional cardiac catheter labs providing high volume PCI experience under the supervision of six
interventional cardiologists. This includes the use of pressure wire assessment of fractional flow reserve, intravascular
imaging (and complex interventions such as left main, bifurcation, CTO and rotational atherectomy procedures). The
Fellow can expect to undertake 400-500 PCI procedures (predominantly via radial artery access) during the 12-month
tenure. There is a busy structural programme (PFO and ASD closure, left atrial appendage occlusion, balloon mitral
valvuloplasty and TAVI). The Fellow will have the opportunity to attend specialist TAVI clinics and MDT’s to enhance
structural training.
There is no routine ward commitment to allow the Fellow to focus their time on developing their interventional
experience.
The Adelaide fellowship also provides the unique opportunity to experience the provision of healthcare to rural
communities and includes an optional clinical attachment to Darwin in the Northern Territory.
The Fellow will be encouraged to engage with the Flinders University academic cardiology unit and to prepare and
submit cases for national and interventional conferences, which they will be able to attend with available funding.
Adelaide, is a thriving, friendly city with excellent transport links. The landscape provides ample opportunity for outdoor
activities such as sailing, snorkelling and cycling. There are beautiful sandy beaches and world-class restaurants.
Overall the fellowship is a fantastic opportunity, not only for interventional experience but, to experience Adelaide and
South Australia and to see the unparalleled beauty of this remote continent. Please do not hesitate to contact me for
further information by email (sheraz.nazir@doctors.org.uk).
