The Battle of Antietam took place on September 17, 1862 near Sharpsburg, Maryland. It was one of the bloodiest single-day battles of the American Civil War, resulting in over 23,000 casualties. The battle began at dawn with a Union attack along the Hagerstown Turnpike. Confederate reinforcements arrived after 7am. Fighting intensified throughout the day as more troops from both sides joined the battle. By late afternoon, the battle concluded with heavy losses on both sides, including over 12,000 Union and 10,000 Confederate casualties.
