A brave young soldier fighting in Rome questions whether he will survive the battle as evening falls and a grey wolf howls in the moonlight, sensing his gloomy fate. The soldier's love, far from Rome, longs for his return home but can only wait and wonder if they will reunite, as a blue owl clutches tightly to a stick in the moonlight, also stirred by the uncertainty of the night. Ultimately, whether the soldier and his love will reunite this night or in a future life is unknown.

Gloomy is his sight,

Time can he borrow?
Blue owl hoots that night,
Under dim moonlight,
Claws on stick so tight,
She’s a stirring sight.

Will they reunite?
Perhaps... tomorrow,

This no one can know.
