• What are the responsibilities of a Paediatric nurse?

Children are unique
• Children are very sensitive, weak, vulnerable
• Anatomical , physiological- BSA, HR, soft bones, nerves,
fontanels
• Immunological- Poor
• Psychosocial- can not communicate, dependent on parent
• Cognitive – React too much on environmental changes
• Require specialized Nursing care
A nurse
• Should have a proper dress code, clean , Ironed
• Should appropriately wear a mask!
• Hair tied
• Nail trimmed
• No bangles, rings, nail polishes, mehendi
• Appropriate shoes
Pediatric Nursing care
Disease
Management
First –
Do no Harm
Family
Management
Maintain Cleanliness
• Clean Hands ( Appropriate Hand wash)
• Clean environment
• Clean instruments
• Clean Patient’s Linens
• Proper disposal of Medical wastes
Know – size and colors of
• Your gadgets
• Instruments
• Fluids
• Tubes
• Bags
• Sensors
• Needles
• Collection tubes
Check and Record-
• Vitals- HR, RR, Temp, BP ( whenever needed)
• SPO2
• Blood Glucose
• Intake Output
Know the Procedures
• Airway clearance/ Suctioning
• Blood Sampling
• Introduction of I/V cannula
• Introduction of NG tube
• Fixing the tubes and lines
• Using slpints
Sites of venipuncture
Suctioning
Positive pressure while introducing..
Keep records
• Write all the medicines given, mention time
• Write your name clearly , not sign or initials
• Ask Doctors if you are not clear, or if the order needs
clarification
Hand over
• Everything
• All information about the patients
• Your responsibilities
• All equipment, drugs
• Report to be collected
At the start of your shift-
• Look at the baby
• Condition
• Oxygen
• Cannula
• I/V channel ( change every 72 hours)
• Sucker machine
• Clothing
• Papers, x-rays
Please have look at the baby
•Whenever you pass by!!
Therapeutic Hugging for Extremity
Vein Puncture
Elbow Restraints
Puncture Site on Sole of Infant’s
Foot
When you receive a child
• Consider TRIAGE
• Attend at shortest possible time, Do not leave the baby
unattended for long
• Do something like positioning, giving suction, starting Oxygen
inhalation, seeing CBG
• Make a rapport, Assure,Ensure
• Show Sympathy, Empathy
Have A good Relationship with….
• Your Patients / and their Parents
• Your Colleagues
• Your Seniors
• Your Assistants
And With Doctors
Be Nice to
the
Visitors
A good Nurse-patient communication
Improves compliance with
medical treatment
Improves health,
functional and emotional
status
Improves clinician’s
satisfaction
Improves patient’s
satisfaction
When you discharge…..
• Be thankful
• Update all of your Papers
• Supply all of Patients Paper
• Counsel the parents about the advices given.

Basic nursing care in child ward

Children are unique • Children are very sensitive, weak, vulnerable • Anatomical , physiological- BSA, HR, soft bones, nerves, fontanels • Immunological- Poor • Psychosocial- can not communicate, dependent on parent • Cognitive – React too much on environmental changes • Require specialized Nursing care
  • 4. A nurse • Should have a proper dress code, clean , Ironed • Should appropriately wear a mask! • Hair tied • Nail trimmed • No bangles, rings, nail polishes, mehendi • Appropriate shoes
  • 5. Pediatric Nursing care Disease Management First – Do no Harm Family Management
  • 6. Maintain Cleanliness • Clean Hands ( Appropriate Hand wash) • Clean environment • Clean instruments • Clean Patient’s Linens • Proper disposal of Medical wastes

  • 8. Know – size and colors of • Your gadgets • Instruments • Fluids • Tubes • Bags • Sensors • Needles • Collection tubes
  • 9. Check and Record- • Vitals- HR, RR, Temp, BP ( whenever needed) • SPO2 • Blood Glucose • Intake Output
  • 10. Know the Procedures • Airway clearance/ Suctioning • Blood Sampling • Introduction of I/V cannula • Introduction of NG tube • Fixing the tubes and lines • Using slpints

  • 16. Keep records • Write all the medicines given, mention time • Write your name clearly , not sign or initials • Ask Doctors if you are not clear, or if the order needs clarification

  • 18. At the start of your shift- • Look at the baby • Condition • Oxygen • Cannula • I/V channel ( change every 72 hours) • Sucker machine • Clothing • Papers, x-rays
