Basal modification is a specialized cell structure found on the basal surface of epithelial cells. It is primarily composed of keratin, integrins, and cadherins. Basal modification functions to provide structural support to the epithelium and acts as a selective barrier between the epithelium and supporting tissue. It facilitates stable adhesion of basal cells to the basement membrane. This is achieved through desmosomes and hemidesmosomes, which connect adjacent epithelial cells and attach epithelial cells to the basement membrane, respectively.
