About Suzuki Early Childhood Education Classes...
A Typical Class
- The weekly, one hour class includes singing,
movement, instrument playing and listening.
Participants experience sharing, turn-taking, and
following directions, all skills needed for school
readiness.
- Each child has an adult (usually a parent) who sits
with the child in the circle and participates in the
music activities with the child.
- Opportunities for pre-academic and pre-literacy
skill development are incorporated into every class.
- Classes end with a story and designated time for
parent journaling.
Ideal Learning Environment
- Teachers, working in partnership with parents,
are committed to maintaining a stimulating, rich and
unpressured environment where each child is
encouraged to participate at his or her own level.
- Younger students learn from the older students.
Older students have the opportunity to function in
leadership roles.
- Repetition of songs and activities allows children
to develop mastery, add the song or activity to
their repertoire and gradually participate in more
sophisticated ways.
Background
Suzuki Early Childhood Education classes are an
extension of the internationally known Suzuki
Method developed by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki. At the
request of Dr. Suzuki, Dorothy Jones—an
instructor trained in the Suzuki Method—designed
a program to develop the youngest child’s musical
ability. The aim of the program is to build on the
child’s natural delight in learning and lay the
foundation for future learning.

Babies who participate in music classes with their
parents smile more, communicate better, and show
earlier and more sophisticated brain responses to music.

Executive functioning (brain activity that correlates with
academic abilities) is developed, enhanced, and
maintained in children with music training.

About Our Lead Teachers
Lead teachers have completed
specialized training in the
Suzuki Early Childhood
Education method and
continue to pursue additional
training in this area. Our lead
teachers are musicians with
undergraduate degrees in
m u s i c a n d e x t e n s i v e
backgrounds in music
performance, music education
and child development.
Outside of Class
- A CD with booklet containing most of the songs
and rhymes used in class is a required purchase at
the first class.
- Parents are asked to play the CD at home daily,
helping their child to become more familiar with
the material. Familiarity with the material brings
greater success in class—truly a win-win scenario.
