Participating in a competitive Boccia program was associated with improved mental health outcomes for people with severe chronic disabilities. Those who competed independently in Boccia tournaments had greater reductions in anxiety and improvements in self-esteem and general health compared to non-competing controls, based on standardized test scores before and after the program. Competing with support from coaches or teammates also led to better mental health than not competing.
