Through 360 cinema, interactive installation and Virtual Reality, SESQUI invites audiences to celebrate Canadian creativity and imagine ourselves in a new way. The project presents many novel challenges for the production team. Our presentation will outline the process of designing content that emphasizes technology that serves as an engine of human connection, rather than alienation, and allows for a “permeable frame” between different media and real and imagined spaces. These challenges will be discussed in the context of a government-supported celebration that aims to be relevant and accessible to all Canadians. Is it possible to find an analogue for Canada through immersive technology? Objective We aim to present SESQUI as a case study of how government projects present both a unique opportunity to foster innovation across industries, and the challenges of creating innovative media for an audience that ranges widely in their familiarity with new forms. Target Audience Everyone interested in creative expression, innovation and being an active participant within an immersive social sculpture contributing to a communal experience. Five Things Audience Members Will Learn Learn about how the Canadian government is harnessing immersive technology for its Sesquicentennial celebrations in 2017. Techniques and challenges related to 360 dome filmmaking and exhibition, Virtual Reality, immersive web development, data visualization and digital marketing, and the holistic connection of these elements. Conceptual thoughts and theories on heterotopias, cross-platform/holistic media and ambient intelligence. Introduction to emerging Canadian VR distribution platforms and content creators. Unique challenges of producing content for government partners, which requires balancing innovation with accessibility, approachability and social responsibility.

Forming a new Business Improvement Area in a low-income community (that's in the midst of developmental pressures and change) takes careful consideration, collaboration and a unique approach to program development. Concerns of gentrification and displacement are valid as new businesses and new forms of development change the makeup of the retail mix and cultural experience of these urban communities. The arrival of new businesses, the growth of social enterprise and renewed interest in these areas can also be leveraged though. This presentation examines the creation and early programming focus of the Hastings Crossing BIA (formed in 2011) as it considered how best to go about supporting businesses and property owners, but in a way where culturally appropriate and socially inclusive programming would not further alienate or discriminate against low-income residents who showed concern for such things as policing of public spaces, criminalization of poverty, displacement and loss of local community assets.

Some initial findings from a year in the field of some of Europe's startup cities. Digital entrepreneurship is an engagement with community-- thus it is important for communities to foster these spaces to ensure they can grow. Technological change and the development of the digital economy have drastically reshaped our connection to our work, our cities and to one another. As technology companies and startup firms have begun to comprise a larger proportion of the global economy, entrepreneurs trading in products and services that exist entirely online are less constrained by geography than ever before. While the constraints to geography slip away for these entrepreneurs, locality takes upon a new meaning. Increasingly, aspiring tech entrepreneurs are choosing startup cities-- transnational social spaces existing on top of, and not entirely within the confines of the modern city. The Startup City exemplifies today's urban superdiversity (Vertovec 2007), new forms that are uniquely comprised of people, institutions, practices, and values, making them distinct from other types of transnational communities grounded in shared ethnicity or religion (Faist 1998). Wholly engaged in entrepreneurship and the technologies that have faci take on a global dimension while inhabiting the modern geography of the city. Many times, these spaces and the people that populate them exist outside the confines of local policy, utilizing privilege and human capital to maneuver around bureaucracy and visa policy. As governments increasingly aim to increase competitiveness by supporting the digital economy and the entrepreneurs that sustain it, we investigate the spaces they inhabit. This piece introduces the features and development of Startup Cities, and outlines the challenges and opportunities they present.

This deck represents our current thinking about the best way to build enterprise SaaS software in 2015 - using a variety of techniques from several disciplines. Since I wrote this I have also become very interested in resilience engineering and the notion that web developers are primarily engaged in the construction of socio-technical systems. When I rewrite this I plan to talk about how we should try to minimize mean-time-to-recover (MTTR) instead of mean-time-between-failures (MTBF), and how continuous deployment grows a safety culture around your operations.
